Mahoning County Dog Warden Dianne Fry said 10 newborn puppies found abandoned Wednesday are healthy and safe.

A woman flagged down a Hubbard Township police sergeant after she found 12 pit bull puppies abandoned alongside Liberty Road, according to The Vindicator’s broadcast partner 21 WFMJ-TV.

The puppies, who were taken to the Mahoning County dog pound, were just hours old, and some still had wet umbilical cords attached to their bodies, Fry said.

Fry said two of the puppies died, but Save a Mom, a nonprofit based out of East Sparta, located in Stark County, agreed to take the remaining 10, where they will be nursed by two dogs that have recently given birth.

Save a Mom specializes in rescuing pregnant dogs that are destined for euthanasia.

“We’re very grateful to Save a Mom,” Fry said. “Taking on 10 puppies; that’s a lot of responsibility.”

The dog warden’s office hasn’t discovered any information about where the puppies originally came from, Fry said.
