Dylan Scott touches all the musical bases
By John Benson
Whether it’s country music or cheese fries, singer Dylan Scott takes the same approach: He wants it loaded with as much as possible.
“I just try everything,” laughed Scott, calling from a hunting trip somewhere in Indiana. “I like music whether it’s country, rap, classical, rock. Hopefully it just reaches everybody.”
Scott’s journey to Music City artist took off a few years ago when he recorded with famed producer Jim Ed Norman. One of the songs he cut was “Making This Boy Go Crazy.” Not only did it sell more than 130,000 singles but also garnered 2.5 million views online.
The track, which is from his 2014 self-titled debut EP, made some noise on the charts but also led to his next moment in the spotlight. This was a country version of Ed Sheeran’s pop hit “Thinking Out Loud.” The cover sold more than 20,000 singles and enjoyed millions of online views.
Now Scott is looking ahead to his full-length debut, which includes his latest single, the top-40 country hit “Crazy Over Me.” However, Scott is showing his immaturity. The song is basically a conversation between himself and his girl. Yet, he breaks the first commandment of a relationship by answering the one question every man should avoid answering at all costs.
The lyrics are as follows, “Well, does this shirt make me look fat?/I kinda leaned back and laughed/And I said, Honey, what kind of question is that?”
What’s he thinking?
“When you’re confident, you have to answer,” Scott laughed. “But let me tell you something, even if you’re playing around, it don’t matter. You better answer it right because they’re going to ask you. If they ask you if they’re fat, you’re like, even if she gained a few pounds, you never say it.”
Connecting with both the women and men is what Scott hopes to accomplish on the full-length debut, which he expects to have out next year. Already the 25-year-old singer-guitarist is playing unreleased songs such as “Can’t Take Her Anywhere” and “My Girl.” The former is a groovy, laid back affair with a little bit of a hip-hop flavor, while the latter is more straight ahead and rocking.
“I just try to hit it all on the album,” said Scott, who will be performing the new tunes when he makes his Youngstown-area debut Saturday at the Dusty Armadillo.
“I know the guys who run the venue,” Scott said. “They’ve been coming to Nashville. I first heard about it three or four years ago. I’m really looking forward to my first time.”
As far as audiences showing their hospitality by perhaps buying him beer, Scott said he prefers food over drinks.
“If you want to send me some cheese fries on stage, that’ll be good,” Scott said. “In between songs, I’ll reach over there. Also, I need the bacon, the cheese, the jalapenos and ranch. I’ll be good to go.”
So it sounds like Scott is taking the same cheese fries approach to his upcoming new album.
He laughed, “Exactly, just a big mixture of everything.”
