To celebrate Fire Safety Week, students at Hilltop Elementary School received a visit from members of the Cardinal Joint Fire District Oct. 9. The firemen presented fire safety tips to students by performing a Fire Safety Quiz Show for each grade level.
A group of students were chosen from each class and Deputy Chief Matt Rarick asked the four teams questions ‘game show style’ and the students had to buzz in first to answer the questions. To help the younger students, a member of the Cardinal Joint Fire District joined each team.
“Good morning, everyone. I’m Deputy Chief Matt Rarick. We are going to play a game and I’m going to ask you some simple fire safety questions today. Just buzz in when you know the answer,” Rarick told the students.
Rarick asked the students, such questions as, “After leaving your house because of a fire, where do you go?” and “When you hear the smoke detector beep, what should you do?”
After several questions and lots of cheering, a winning class was declared, which received glow in the dark bracelets. All other students received hats, stickers and coloring books compliments of the fire department.
After the Fire Safety Quiz Show, the firefighters invited the children outside to check out the fire truck parked in front of the school. Firefighter Ron Hinderliter showed and explained the truck’s equipment to the students. Firefighter Dominic Reinthaler thrilled the students when he buckled himself in with a firefighter’s belt and climbed the fully extended ladder on the truck.
Members of the Cardinal Joint Fire District also visited C.H. Campbell Elementary School with their Fire Safety Quiz Show during Fire Safety Week.
