Brookfield HOF event set for Nov. 28

BROOKFIELD

The Brookfield Athletic Hall of Fame banquet is set for Nov. 28 at 6 p.m. at the high school.

This year’s inductees are: Ashton Hall, 1932; the 1955 football team; the 1956 football team; Tom Sanata, 1975; Bill Greathouse, 1978; Lorne Conyers, 1984; and Kevin Wellendorf, 1995.

Banquet tickets cost $25 and may be purchased at the high school, at Laddies or at Logan & Company.

YSU volleyball adds 2 players

YOUNGSTOWN

Volleyball players from Texas and Michigan have signed letters-of-intent to play for Youngstown State University.

Valor Haggerty is a 5-foot-11 middle blocker from McKinney, Texas, and Erin Kalahar is a 5-foot-10 outside hitter from Jackson, Mich.

“Both have good character, are strong students and are tremendous athletes,” YSU volleyball coach Mark Hardaway said. “Their athleticism should allow them to compete right away in the gym. They both can play multiple positions.”

7th Feed the Need 5K slated in McDonald

Vertical Runner will stage the 7th annual Feed the Need 5K on Nov. 28. The run will start and finish at The Learning Tree, 201 Ohio Ave.

Participants wishing to register may do so online at www.run2VR.com or in person at Vertical Runner, 241 E. Marshall Road. Registration fee is $15 plus two canned goods.

All of the canned goods collected will go to the Second Harvest Food Bank, and 100 percent of the monetary proceeds will go to the Lions’ Charities.

Canfield to induct 16 into Hall of Fame

The Canfield High School Athletic Hall of Fame will add 16 members on Jan. 23 at 6:30 p.m. at The Embassy.

The inductees are: Holly Coleman-Heikkinen, 1998, volleyball and basketball; Kevin Culp, 1999; baseball and basketball; Larry Davis, coach and contributor; Marty Fitzgerald, 1990, golf and baseball; Jerry Hickman, 1978, football, golf, basketball and baseball; Tom James, 1965, football and track; Jason Kemble, 1997, football, basketball and track; Ray McCune, Jr., 1990, basketball; Amy Majernik-Herrmann, 1989, volleyball, swimming and track; Bob Neff, 1935, football; Scott Pfahler, 1995, tennis; Matt Pietro, 2004, football and soccer; Ken Popovec, 1979, contributor; Tom Porterfield, 1973, cross country and track; Chad Rosko, 1987, football, basketball and baseball; and Steve Stanislaw, 1977, cross country, basketball and baseball.

The banquet’s speaker will be Ken Krebs, a 1977 graduate of Canfield who earned Phi Beta Kappa honor society membership as an undergraduate at Cornell University. Krebs also graduated from the Duke University School of Law.

Girard’s Walters receives honor

GIRARD

Morgan Walters, a senior senior setter for Gannon University, is the recipient of a American Volleyball Coaches Association scholarship.

Walters is a communications major and team captain for the Golden Knights. She led in assists and total sets played.

Rockets fire McHale

HOUSTON

The Houston Rockets have fired Kevin McHale with the team off to a lackluster 4-7 start just a year after advancing to the Western Conference finals.

Assistant J. B. Bickerstaff will take over as interim head coach.

McHale was in his fifth season with Houston and is coming off a 56-26 season where the Rockets reached the West finals for the first time since 1997. The 57-year-old Hall of Fame player went 193-130 with the Rockets.
