Legacy Dog Rescue and Never Muzzled will sponsor a free straw giveaway at 11 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot at Family Video, 801 N. State St.

The straw for bedding for dogs housed outdoors will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Blase Brush, a Legacy volunteer, said last year about 80 bales of straw were distributed.

“The straw is to make dogs outside more comfortable in the winter,” he said. “It helps the animals.”

Brush did note that Legacy rescue only adopts out dogs to inside homes.

“We realize some people keep dogs outside, and this is a way to make them more comfortable in winter weather,” he said.

Legacy also is wrapping up a collection of new and gently worn shoes at seven sites in the Valley as part of a project in partnership with Wooftrax.

The rescue group had aimed to collect some 2,000 pounds of shoes; it has amassed about 1,000 pounds.

Brush said for the rescue to receive monetary proceeds, it had to reach 2,000 pounds.

“It’s the first time we tried it,” he said of the project.

“Wooftrax refurbishes the shoes by cleaning them up and putting on new soles and they are distributed in Central America. We kept them out of a landfill.”
