Unions suing GE

YOUNGSTOWN

Several labor unions are suing to prevent General Electric from canceling health benefits for tens of thousands of retired employees around the nation, including some who once worked for GE in the Mahoning Valley, according to The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, 21 WFMJ-TV.

The IUE-CWA and eight other labor entities filed a class-action lawsuit in U.S. District Court on behalf of what the unions estimate are more than 50,000 retirees.

According to the lawsuit, GE announced in July that retired production employees and their spouses, who are currently Medicare-eligible and who participate in the Prescription Drug Plan, the Medical Care Plan and the Medicare Part B Plan, will be terminated from those plans as of Jan. 1.

Ohio gas prices fall

Northeast Ohio pump prices have fallen for 10-consecutive days, reaching Tuesday’s national average price of $2.16 per gallon.

The AAA believes that average U.S. prices should continue to decline and could drop below $2 per gallon by Christmas for the first time since 2009. The price of crude oil remains noticeably low compared with previous years, and as a result, retail averages are down 74 cents per gallon year-over-year.
