YOUNGSTOWN

At least one person was shot and killed and at least two others were wounded at the Southern Tavern on Glenwood Avenue, near Cleveland Street late Monday night.

Concerned onlookers gathered around the bar and asked about people they heard were inside, as police sectioned off the area with crime scene tape.

Police were called to the South Side bar Monday at 1508 Glenwood Ave., about 10:50 p.m. A dispatcher called for several ambulances, and the initial report was at least four people were shot.

Multiple police cruisers responded to the scene. At least two people were wheeled into ambulances. One of those was a man well enough to call out.

A body lay outside the bar covered with a sheet, though police declined to confirm any deaths as of press time.

One person could be heard yelling from inside the tavern.

Police did not release a suspected motive behind the shooting.

If the death is ruled a homicide, it would mark death the city’s 21st this year.

There were 19 homicides in 2014.

The city surpassed that number early Saturday morning, when Thomas Owens, 33, died after being shot in the head in the 500 block of Myrtle Avenue, also on the South Side, bringing the year’s homicide total to 20.
