On encyclical

VILLA MARIA, PA.

Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center will offer a one-day presentation on the recent encyclical of Pope Francis.

The conference, “Laudato Si: On Care for our Common Home,” will be presented from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 5 by Sisters Barbara O’Donnell and Barbara Lenarcic.

Pope Francis speaks a universal message addressing urgent concerns for humanity’s relationship with Earth.

The day will include film, input, sharing insights, personal prayer and ritual.

Each participant will receive a bound copy of the encyclical.

Cost is $20 including a copy of the encyclical, lunch and refreshments.

Church activities

YOUNGSTOWN

Pastor Jonathan Mitchell of Faith Fellowship Church of God, 388 E. Midlothian Blvd., will receive new members into the fellowship during a service at 10:45 a.m. Sunday.

A pot-luck dinner will follow in the fellowship hall.

At 2 p.m., there will be Gospel singing by Sky Pilot.

Community Day

YOUNGSTOWN

Church Women United celebrated World Community Day Nov. 6 on the theme, “Our Journey Together,” at Centenary United Methodist Church, 1413 Belmont Ave., where the Rev. Duane Buie is pastor.

L.K. Williams of United Methodist Women conducted the service. Speakers were the Rev. Dr. Robin Woodberry, assistant pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church and director of Mahoning Valley Association of Churches; Jackie Burley, director of Protestant Family Service; Hawa Buie, wife of the pastor at Cententry; and Azka Mailk of Masjidd Al-Khair Mosque.

Shelley L. English was selected as Valiant Woman of the Year. She has been a member of Greater Friendship Baptist Church for more than 65 years.

Janet Smart presided at the CWU meeting; Shirley Megown is CWU president.
