Checks, $6,700 stolen from car console

AUSTINTOWN

Township police are investigating a report of checks and money stolen from a vehicle parked at a Pinecrest Avenue residence.

The victim said he left his locked car in his mother’s driveway Nov. 5 and returned Nov. 12. Stolen were checks from his bank account and $6,700 in the console. Upon inspection, a police officer discovered the driver’s-side door lock was broken.

Mercy Health awards

YOUNGSTOWN

Mercy Health Youngstown Police Department was recognized in a ceremony Friday for the department’s International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety Department Accreditation and Department Distinction Award.

The department earned this recognition, presented by David LaRose, president of the IAHSS executive board, for having at least 80 percent of its commissioned police officers earning their IAHSS officer certification. The YPD is the only active health care-based police department in Ohio to have it.

Also, Ryan Bonacci, former Lowellville police chief, was recognized for receiving two national awards through the American Police Hall of Fame: Honor Award for Public Service for his dedication and commitment to serving the community and public in support of safety and security; and the J. Edgar Hoover Memorial Award for his dedication and commitment for continuing law enforcement education competency.

United Way donation

YOUNGSTOWN

Home Savings Charitable Foundation will present a $33,000 check to United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the United Way offices, 255 Watt St.

Frank Hierro, Home Savings Mahoning Valley regional president, will present the check to UW representatives. The funds will be used for the annual program support.
