ATHENA Award

The Marion-Grant County (Indiana) Chamber of Commerce honored Jennifer Lane-Riefler, an Austintown native and executive director of Cancer Services of Grant County, with the ATHENA Award at its Nov. 6 dinner.

Lane-Riefler began her Cancer Services of Grant County career in 1999. Before her arrival, Cancer Services had two employees and offered few services. In the past 16 years, Lane-Riefler guided the organization to become a nationally recognized local cancer organization. She is frequently called upon to speak about cancer-services programming and other health or cancer-related subjects at conferences at the state and national level.

She is a graduate of Austintown Fitch High School and Youngstown State University.

Mall announces holiday events

BOARDMAN

Southern Park Mall on Friday announced some of its holiday events and scheduling.

Holiday events kick off Tuesday, with a parade at 6 p.m. led by the Boardman High School Pep Band. Tuesday also marks the beginning of Santa Claus’ stay at the mall, which runs through Dec. 24.

The mall also announced it will be open from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Thanksgiving, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. for Black Friday, and will have extended hours in December.

Other planned events include the American Cancer Society “Festival of Trees,” a pet photo night, breakfast with Santa and more.

US retail sales crawl upward

WASHINGTON

Americans ramped up their online shopping and restaurant spending in October, but barely-there inflation kept overall retail sales growth muted.

The Commerce Department said Friday that retail sales rose a seasonally adjusted 0.1 percent last month, after being unchanged in September and August.
