Layups for Lucy aims to raise $10,000

NEW CASTLE, PA.

Layups for Lucy, a community event to benefit Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, will be Saturday in the gymnasium at Neshannock High School, 3834 Mitchell Road. Neshannock students are aiming to shoot 10,000 layups and raise $10,000. Grace Beal, a Neshannock 8th grader, organized the event in honor of her sister who died of a congenital heart disease in 2009.

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a free basketball drills and skills seminar for elementary students. At 6 p.m., athletes in grades 4-12 will begin shooting layups. Neshannock cheerleaders, dance line, singers and others entertainers will perform. There will also be face painting, a photo booth, musical entertainment, basket raffle, and a half-court shot competition with a prize of free Chick-fil-A for a year.

Admission is $2 for adults and free for students. For information, contact Beal at 412-304-9551 or Corri Metz at 412-841-3283.

Beatitude House seeks yule donations

YOUNGSTOWN

Every year homeless children living at Beatitude House have an opportunity to pick out a gift for their mom, wrap it and put it under the Christmas tree. This is possible thanks to donations from the community, which are needed.

Items can be something practical such as gloves, scarves, socks, slippers or dish towels or something not-so-practical, like a bath set, jewelry, frames, books or perfume. No candles will be accepted.

If you are interested in donating to the workshop, bring unwrapped gifts to Beatitude House’s administrative offices located at 238 Tod Lane on the campus of St. Edward Parish. Donations are accepted from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. All gifts must be received by Dec. 14. Call 330-744-3147 with questions.
