VETERANS DAY | Scheduled events


A list of services, ceremonies and other events for Veterans Day as submitted to The Vindicator. Events are today unless otherwise noted.

TRUMBULL

Girard: Veterans Day services, sponsored by the Girard Veterans Council and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 419, will kick off at 5:30 p.m. The event includes prayers, music and a parade beginning at 6 p.m. with marchers walking south down Market Street to Liberty Street. The Girard High School band will play the national anthem and the Girard Veterans Council Honor Guard will perform a rifle salute.

Liberty: The faculty and students of Liberty High School will honor veterans with a 1:30 p.m. ceremony at the school, 1 Leopard Way. The high school band and choir will perform. There will be a recognition of veterans and a guest speaker.

MAHONING

Austintown: Austintown Fitch High School, 4560 Falcon Drive, will host a Veterans Day assembly at 9 a.m. in the school auditorium. Army Veteran Kenneth David and Gold Star military mother Chris Wortman will speak at the event. Vietnam veteran Raymond Gordon will be honored for his military service. A reception for the speakers and honoree will follow in the Fitch media center.

Lowellville: Lowellville High School, 52 Rocket Place, will have a Veterans Day assembly from 8:30 to 10 a.m.. Any veteran interested in attending the event should contact Larry Sammartino by calling 330-536-8426, ext. 158.

Struthers: A Veterans Day ceremony at the Struthers Veterans Memorial, at the intersection of Morrison and Euclid Streets, will be at 11 a.m.. Guest speaker will be Major Michael E. Curtis USAR retired. The high school band will also participate in the service. The public is welcome to attend.

Youngstown: The 11th annual Hispanic Veterans appreciation dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the OCCHA social hall, 3660 Shirley Road. Dinner will be served at 6:30, and a program is at 7:15. Guest speaker is Fred Elbert, a Vietnam Veteran who was a prisoner of war for four years. Cost is $12 per person. Youngstown: Youngstown-area veterans will be honored at the annual Veterans Day observance at 11 a.m. in the Mahoning County Courthouse rotunda. Featured speaker will be Bob Bush, a Marine veteran of the Vietnam War, who received two Purple Hearts and a Navy Commendation Medal for valor in combat. Bush is director of the county’s Department of Job and Family Services and a former Youngstown police chief and law director. This year’s event will feature a presentation of the colors by the Youngstown State University ROTC color guard, the national anthem performed by Maureen Collins of Easy Street Productions, and the choir of St. Joseph the Provider School in Campbell.

Youngstown: Auxiliary of VFW Donald Lockett Post 6488, 2065 Coitsville-Hubbard Road, will host a Veterans Day observance at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. R.B. Martin will speak and there will be a tribute to Conrad Lloyd O. Mims Sr.
