Snow, tornadoes expected from storm system

NORMAN, Okla.

Forecasters say a mixture of bad weather including heavy snow and tornadoes is expected as a strong storm system plows toward the central U.S. from the Rocky Mountains.

A blizzard warning was issued for Tuesday night and today in the Great Plains east of Denver, while tornadoes and high winds could rake parts of the Midwest today.

“November has a history of producing some significant weather events. We will have to keep an eye on things,” said Greg Carbin, warning coordination meteorologist at the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla.

Violence returns to Jerusalem after two-week lull

JERUSALEM

Two Palestinian boys, age 11 and 14, stabbed and wounded an Israeli guard on a train who responded by firing and wounding one of them Tuesday. Meanwhile, Israeli security forces killed two other Palestinians who carried out knife attacks, police said, as violence returned to Jerusalem after a two-week lull.

The train attack was reminiscent of a similar case from October when two young Palestinian cousins stabbed two Israelis in east Jerusalem. That case became fodder for the ongoing war of words between the Palestinian and Israeli governments, and the trial of one of the attackers began Tuesday.

Statement says Carter is responding well to treatment

ATLANTA

Doctors have found Jimmy Carter is responding well to treatment for cancer and report no evidence of new tumors, according to a statement released by the former U.S. president’s spokeswoman Tuesday.

Doctors at Emory University’s Winship Cancer Institute told Carter “that recent tests have shown there is no evidence of new malignancy, and his original problem is responding well to treatment,” spokeswoman Deanna Congileo said in the statement.

Tests will continue, she added.

PORTLAND, Ore.

An armed deputy sheriff has started patrolling an Oregon college where a gunman killed nine people and himself last month.

Douglas County deputy Scott Batsch began patrols Monday at Umpqua Community College. When a shooter attacked the Roseburg campus Oct. 1, it had one guard armed only with pepper spray.

Batsch is a recently retired deputy with experience as a school resource officer, patrolman and detective.
