Manager Nick Lambert cites his mother as an inspiration for opening Dollar Slices Pizza Co.

“She’s not a big eater,” Lambert said. “But, if it’s cheap and family friendly with good food, she can be convinced to eat there.”

The restaurant, which offers delivery, carry-out and a small seating area, opened in October at 971 McCartney Road across from Walgreens.

Lambert said he was drawn to the area’s traffic and the demand for convenient late-night food. He’s said he’s already on a first-name basis with several repeat customers who range from grandparents to kids too short to see over the counter.

“We get so many calls from people begging us not to go out of business – like so many of the other places that have been in this building,” Lambert said.

Popular items include gyros, $5 daily specials and wings for $9 a dozen.

And, yes, pizza really is a dollar a slice.

The restaurant’s grand opening drew a crowd last month. The first 25 people in line won a voucher for a free slice of pizza each month for a year.

“That was amazing,” Lambert said. “I drove in to work at 6 a.m. that morning, and there was already a line of people outside the door.”

Going forward, the restaurant hopes to add ribs to its menu. The chef also has been experimenting with gluten-free pizza crust.

The key to tasty pizza is a crispy crust and sauce that’s not too tart and not too sweet, Lambert said. Don’t ask him for specifics on the sauce recipe, though – it’s a secret.

“Just try the pizza,” Lambert said. “People who don’t even like pizza, like our pizza. And it’s a dollar slice, so why not?”
