Afternoon service

BOARMAN

St. James’ Episcopal Church, 7640 Glenwood Ave., is offering an afternoon service at 4:30 p.m. Sundays in addition to the 10 a.m. Eucharist. The Rev. Shawn Dickerson, parish priest, will lead both. The new alternative 30-minute service is casual.

Hymn festival

GIRARD

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Youngstown Stake will host a Thanksgiving Hymn Festival at 6 p.m. next Saturday at the Youngstown Chapel, 2205 Tibbetts Wick Road.

The free concert will feature a statewide choral group of seven ward choirs, soloists and instrumentalists. Director Brian Ebie said songs of the season will be complemented with inspiring words of thanksgiving.

The public is invited, and admission is free.

Bishop to speak

YOUNGSTOWN

Bishop George V. Murry of the Diocese of Youngstown will give a feature presentation with participation from local rabbis titled “A Community Conversation: Jewish-Catholic Relations 50 Years after Nostra Aetate” at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane.

The program is free and open to the public with a dessert reception.

Groening lecture

Bruno Groening Circle of Friends will have a 90-minute lecture, with Arlene Barkan, leader of Youngstown and Cleveland Communities, and Internet Children’s Community of North America, at 6 p.m. Thursday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 550 N. Broad St.

A documentary film will be shown. Admission is free.

The Circle of Friends is not affiliated with Lord of Life Lutheran Church or any other religion. To attend community hours, participants must be introduced at an information lecture.

Family church

YOUNGSTOWN

A family church has begun at Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center, 300 E. Scott St. Family visitation is from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., followed by the service from 1:30 to 2:30 with testimony, prayer, message and music.

The Rev. James Barkett, chaplain, said the service allows for more family time. Judge Theresa Dellick began the service.

Church seminar

New Bethel Baptist Church, 1107 Hillman St., will sponsor “Living By the Face We Embrace” at 6:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. Facilitators will be the Rev. Lewis W. Macklin, men’s class; the Rev. Gena Thornton, women’s class; the Rev. James Bowie, co-ed class; Cherry Robinson, children’s class; and Bianca Smith and Tanisha Wheeler, youth.
