Phone disruption at Rescue Mission

Telephone service at the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley’s Emergency Shelter, 962 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., and its distribution center at 2246 Glenwood Ave. was disrupted about noon Thursday and was not back in service as of late Friday.

A Rescue Mission spokesman said he is uncertain what caused the outage or when it will be repaired.

Individuals who need emergency assistance can call the mission at 330-503-6825 until the regular service is re-established.

Road closings for bridge repairs

Starting today, U.S. Route 62 westbound between South and Himrod avenues will be closed for bridge repairs from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. until further notice, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Also, the entrance ramp from Himrod Avenue to 62 westbound will remain closed until July for bridge construction.

The detour is Lane Avenue to Rayen Avenue to Albert Street.

The 62 bridge between South and Himrod avenues, over the Mahoning River, Poland Avenue, Cedar Street, and the railroad, is reduced to one lane in each direction for bridge repairs.

This work is part of a $17 million project to make repairs to the Route 62 bridge.

The work is scheduled to be finished by November 2016.

28 scholarships are awarded

YOUNGSTOWN

A record number of young scholars from the Mahoning Valley will benefit this year from scholarships awarded by the Cafaro Foundation.

This year, 28 students have earned scholarship money totaling $67,000, the largest the foundation has awarded for scholarships in a single year and $10,000 more than last year.

Cafaro Foundation trustees selected the scholarship recipients based primarily on the students’ academic merit, while also considering their financial need and the recommendations of teachers and guidance counselors.

Suspect charged in robbery, assault

A Youngstown man is charged with robbery, felonious assault and two counts of criminal damaging after he was taken into custody by township police and U.S. marshals in West Virginia on Thursday.

Police say Terrence Parker, 30, of Canton Street, threatened victims with a knife, slashed the tires of one victim’s car and then stole two phones and cash from the victims during an incident May 4 at a Cook Avenue residence.

Parker was taken to the Mahoning County jail.

Convicted in death of roommate

A Boardman man was convicted Friday of vehicular manslaughter, a second-degree misdemeanor, after running over and killing his roommate in February.

Max Fitzer, 60, of Macarthur Drive, was sentenced to 12 months’ of probation, fined $100, and given a 90-day suspended jail sentence.

Police say that Fitzer ran over his roommate, Eric Bacher, 49, after the two came home one night in February. Fitzer, who police say showed signs of intoxication, called 911 after realizing what had happened, according to a police report.

When police arrived at the scene, they found Bacher under a vehicle in the garage with “no signs of life.”
