Penguins perform well at NCAA preliminaries

Senior Eric Rupe, junior Jay Jakovina and sophomore Arnaldo Morales each turned in solid performances on Friday at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminaries at the University of North Florida.

Morales fininshed tied for 28th in the high jump after clearing 2.04 meters and Jakovina placed 33rd with a jump of 2.04 meters. Rupe closed out his impressive YSU career with a 35th-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:05.69.

Junior Austin McLean was not able to compete due to a leg injury.

Local MMA fight card tonight in Campbell

Some of the top local talent will fight in tonight’s MMA card at St. Lucy’s Palermo Center in Campbell.

The 12-fight contest is full of amateur fighters from Youngstown, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Local competitors include Joe Sofranko, Chris Lozano, Mike Hice, Gary Taylor, Jarrod Ayers, Nick Tarr, and Tyler Collins.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the fights start at 7:30. Tickets at the door are $30.

Erin Gabriel named Academic All-American

Tennessee junior pitcher, and Poland High School graduate, Erin Gabriel was named to the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America Division I softball team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Gabriel, who is majoring in Nutrition, has a team-high 3.98 cumulative GPA. She was previously named to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 team in 2014 and 2015.

On the field, Gabriel is enjoying the best season of her career. She is 17-7 with a 2.85 ERA and 157 strikeouts over 137.1 innings and she has held opposing hitters to a .214 batting average.

Tennessee will face Auburn in a Women’s College World Series elimination game today at noon.

Browns waive long snapper Yount

The Browns waived veteran long snapper Christian Yount.

The 26-year-old Yount had been with Cleveland since replacing Ryan Pontbriand in 2011. One of the NFL’s steadiest snappers, Yount struggled last season, forcing the Browns to sign Charley Hughlett off Kansas City’s practice squad a few days before the finale in Baltimore.

Yount appeared in 53 games with the Browns, who signed him to a five-year, $4.2 million contract extension in 2013.

Reddick takes charge, wins Truck Series race

Tyler Reddick took the lead with seven laps left and held on to win the Camping World Truck Series race Friday night at Dover International Speedway.

Reddick passed Erik Jones to win for the second time this season. Reddick also won the season opener at Daytona.

Daniel Saurez was second. Jones, who turns 19 on Saturday, finished third for his 11th career top-five finish. Saurez and Jones helped make it a 2-3 finish for Kyle Busch Motorsports.

Hamlin wins the pole at Dover Speedway

Denny Hamlin turned a lap of 160.121 mph Friday at Dover International Speedway to win his first pole of the season.

Hamlin won the Dover pole for the third time in the last six races.

Martin Truex Jr., who has one of his two career Sprint Cup wins at Dover, joins Hamlin on the front row. Kyle Larson, Matt Kenseth and Joey Logano round out the top five.

Local PAV training opportunity at Fitch

Northside Medical Center Sports Medicine will host a Pupil Activity Validation training at Austintown Fitch High School next month.

The training will take place on June 17 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and cost $25. For more information contact Kyle Radak at kradak@austintownschools.org.
