The Parent-Teacher Organization gave Poland Union Elementary School students a special treat on May 14.

Tim Oswald, owner of Kona-Ice of Youngstown brought his snow cone truck to the school, playing classic ice-cream truck music as he distributed plain snow cones to all the students. At the end of the truck, students got to pick and add whatever flavors they liked to add to their snow cone.

Principal Michael Masucci announced the arrival of the snow cone treat pulling classes out one-by-one to accept their treat.

Erica Donahue, preschool teacher, said the nicest thing about the treat was being able to enjoy the warm weather.

“We waited a long time for the sunshine,” Donahue said. “So it was nice to celebrate the sunshine finally arriving.”

After flavoring their snow cones, students sat on the front lawn of the school, talking and playing with one another as they enjoyed the cool treat on a warm day.

Gina Chiaro, kindergarten teacher, said she was happy to see them get a reward for the year’s effort of school they had put in.

“It’s just a fun little treat for working real hard for the whole year,” Chiaro said. “It’s something to look forward to at the end of the year. It’s a nice little retreat.”

Chiaro also said the students were unaware of the snow cone treat until just that morning.

“We wanted to keep them working hard as long as we can, so we didn’t tell them,” Chiaro said.
