UPDATE | Victim ID'ed who was shot by Warren cop

WARREN — Police Chief Eric Merkel has identified the man who was shot by a Warren police officer Wednesday night as Randall E. Bryant, 45, of Harrison Street Northeast.

Merkel said Bryant was hit by one or more shots from the officer and is in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Merkel did not identify the officer.

A woman at the residence called for an ambulance at about 11:30, reporting that her daughter had been assaulted by Bryant, but he had left the home, Merkel said.

But Bryant returned while the ambulance workers were there, and an officer responded.

Bryant came out of the house with a shotgun and was ordered to show the officer his hands and put down the gun, but he did not comply and was shot, Merkel said.

The officer is on paid administrative leave, while the Ohio Bureau of Investigation conducts the investigation.

Merkel said he could not discuss show many times Bryant was shot or where he was hit.
