Serious injuries

GOSHEN

A 33-year-old man sustained serious injuries from an accident that closed U.S. Route 62 near Goshen Township for a couple of hours, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol in Lisbon. The accident occurred at 8:07 p.m. with the first responders on the scene just after 8:30 p.m. The driver was traveling east when he lost control of his vehicle, crossed over to the left side and overturned, OSHP Sgt. Shaun Baskerville said. There were no passengers in the vehicle, he said. The driver was air-lifted to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, and OSHP cleared the scene by about 11 p.m. Identification of the driver was not being released until his family was notified, Baskerville said.

Felony escape charge

BOARDMAN

A township man faces a felony escape charge after he got away from a police officer escorting him to the hospital. Aaron Lee, 36, of Erskine Avenue was taken into custody Saturday after he reportedly violated conditions of his bond after a domestic incident Friday. When police apprehended him, he insisted on being taken to a hospital, where he escaped while he was supposed to be providing a urine sample. Multiple officers and a canine searched for Lee and eventually found him on Washington Boulevard, according to a police report. He is charged with obstruction of official business, criminal trespass, escape and domestic violence.

Shelter assault

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are investigating allegations that a 13-year-old girl was assaulted by a staff member at a Youngstown shelter, according to Vindicator broadcast partner, 21 WFMJ-TV. The young girl said she was placed in a choke hold and stabbed with a grill fork by a 47-year-old inside the Daybreak shelter operated by Compass Family and Community Services. After the incident, the girl called her mother, who reported the incident to the authorities.

Attempted robbery

AUSTINTOWN

A man tried to rob a gas station Tuesday morning. Austintown officers were called to Country Fair station, 1143 N. Canfield-Niles Road, at 1:29 a.m. for a robbery in progress. A police report said a male walked into the store with a bandanna covering his face, “while simulating his hand as a gun and demanded money from both clerks.” The two clerks refused to give him money and he ran from the store. A police dog was able to track the suspect to the area of the Comfort Inn on Clarkins Drive, but lost the trail.

Multiple charges

BOARDMAN

A North Lima man faces a charge of attempted felonious assault after an incident with the mother of his child and her current boyfriend. Zachary Jones, 25, also is charged with violating a protection order and domestic violence. The female victim told police that Jones came to her Lealand Avenue residence Monday, in violation of a protection order she has against him, screamed at her and her boyfriend, used a racial slur against her boyfriend, then started a fight with him. Jones then reportedly drove his car directly at the two victims. Police observed injuries on the male victim. They also observed injuries on Jones when they arrested him at his home, which led police to charge him with attempted assault instead of assault, according to a police report.

Man shot in leg

WARREN

A man, 30, of Warren, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg during an apparent robbery in the 2200 block of Hamilton Street Southwest at 10:20 p.m. Friday. Police interviewed him at ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital, where he said he was shot during a robbery by three people who got out of a vehicle on Hamilton Street. The victim said the gunfire occurred as he was running away from them. A woman living in the 2200 block also reported a bullet had passed through a wall of her house and landed in her kitchen. Police believe the shot was fired from the house next door, where police recovered $26 in cash in the back yard.

Man found was shot

WARREN

A Warren man, 29, was found in the front yard of a house in the 100 block of Oak Knoll Avenue Southeast at 11:15 p.m. Friday with a gunshot wound to the shoulder and hand. The man was taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital and appeared to have a broken femur, police said. The victim said he was “just walking down the street and someone started to shoot at him.” He ran but was hit, he said.

Vote on 911 plan

WARREN

City council is expected to vote tonight on the controversial plan to have the Trumbull County 911 Center take over dispatching for Warren police. Enzo Cantalamessa, Warren safety-service director, said Ernie Cook, county 911 director, plans to attend tonight’s meeting to address questions.

Mathews school board will have a special meeting at 5 p.m. today in the board office.

Business padlocked

WARREN

A Trumbull County magistrate on Tuesday ordered that Atlantic Beverages, 408 Atlantic St. NE, remain padlocked, and no one be allowed to enter. Magistrate Beth Aurilio listened to testimony during a hearing in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court, including testimony from Warren Police Detective Melanie Gamble, and issued an order for preliminary injunction. It extends the temporary restraining order Judge Ronald Rice approved, effective May 14. That order followed a May 14 raid at the store that police said turned up evidence that employees were selling oxycodone out of the business.

Health conference

AUSTINTOWN

Mahoning County District Board of Health is planning a conference on how to deal with ebola and other special pathogens, such as smallpox, should an outbreak occur locally. T

he tentative date for the conference at the Boardman Holiday Inn is July 30, said Joseph Diorio, director of the health department’s community health division.

Diorio said community partners, including representatives of hospitals, Youngstown City Health District, first responders and law enforcement will be invited to share their expert advice on many aspects, including personal protective equipment, medical transportation, isolation-quarantine enforcement, human-remains disposal and disseminating public information.

Diorio said at some point officials here will assist Trumbull County health officials in developing a plan specific for that county.
