Local unemployment rate down to 5.7 percent in April


YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Valley’s nonseasonally adjusted jobless rate dropped from a 6.2 percent in April 2014 down to 5.7 percent in April 2015.

The number of employed in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties went from 233,300 in April 2014 to 234,500 in April 2015.

A total of 14,100 people were listed as unemployed in April 2015 compared with 15,400 in the same month the year before.

The civilian labor force went unchanged year over year at 249,000.

Mahoning County’s sole jobless rate for the month was 5.6 percent, down from 6.1 percent the same month the year before. Trumbull County’s was 5.9 percent in April 2015 compared with 6.5 percent in April 2014.

Columbiana County’s April unemployment rate was 5.3 percent compared with 5.9 percent during the same month the previous year.

Ohio’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in April was 5.2 percent. The national rate was 5.4 percent.
