IRS: Thieves stole tax info from 100,000
WASHINGTON
Sophisticated criminals used an online service run by the IRS to access personal tax information from more than 100,000 taxpayers, part of an elaborate scheme to steal identities and claim fraudulent tax refunds, the IRS said Tuesday.
The thieves accessed a system called “Get Transcript,” where taxpayers can get tax returns and other filings from previous years. In order to access the information, the thieves cleared a security screen that required knowledge about the taxpayer, including Social Security number, date of birth, tax filing status and street address, the IRS said.
“We’re confident that these are not amateurs,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen.
Koskinen wouldn’t say whether investigators believe the criminals are based overseas – or where they obtained enough personal information about the taxpayers to access their returns. The IRS has launched a criminal investigation.
Judge to decide if PPG retiree stays in jail
PITTSBURGH
A federal magistrate in Pittsburgh was scheduled to decide whether a retired PPG researcher will remain jailed until he stands trial on federal charges that he stole trade secrets worth hundreds of millions of dollars for a Chinese company.
Tuesday’s detention hearing was previously postponed at the request of the defense attorney for 62-year-old Thomas Rukavina of Plum. That was done so Rukavina could undergo a mental-health evaluation.
Rukavina was arrested May 7, and indicted two weeks later after purportedly stealing trade secrets from PPG Industries Inc. related to plastic windows that can be used on aircraft and high-speed trains.
Rise in Cuba tourism
HAVANA
The thaw in relations between the U.S. and Cuba has led to a stunning 36 percent increase in visits by Americans to the island, including thousands who are flying into Cuba from third countries like Mexico in order to sidestep U.S. restrictions on tourism. The dramatic rise was seen in the number of Americans with no family ties to Cuba who visited between Jan. 1 and May 9 of this year compared with the same period in 2014, according to statistics provided to The Associated Press.
