Closing arguments begin for Ohio ex-lawmaker in fraud case

CINCINNATI (AP) — Closing arguments have begun in the trial of a former Ohio lawmaker accused of defrauding a technology company’s investors out of millions of dollars.

Hamilton County Judge John West today declined a defense motion to acquit former state Rep. Pete Beck, a 62-year-old certified public accountant who pleaded not guilty to dozens of charges.

The charges, including corruption, theft and securities-related counts, relate to his work as an official for the technology company.

When the trial began in March, defense attorneys argued that Beck is being used as a scapegoat because officials mismanaged the company.

The case was heard as a nonjury trial. The closing arguments are expected to continue Thursday.
