Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley will organize its first reunion for about 300 patients, families and staff members who spent time in a neonatal intensive care unit at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, 1044 Belmont Ave., Youngstown, or special nursery care on the Beeghly campus, 6505 Market St.

The reunion will take place at the Beeghly campus from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 20.

The free event is an opportunity to reconnect a group of families with medical professionals who cared for them.

The reunion will include a group walk, children’s games and activities, food and an opportunity for parents to take photos of their children wearing NICU graduation caps.

Cancer-benefit ride to stop in Valley

YOUNGSTOWN

Cyclists who will participate in the 2015 4K for Cancer Ride from Baltimore to Seattle will pass through Youngstown.

There will be 31 participants traveling from Oil City, Pa., into downtown Youngstown to First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave., on June 6. They will leave the next day from the church traveling to Cleveland.

The 70-day, more than 4,000-mile ride will leave Baltimore at 7 a.m. Sunday and finish at noon Aug. 8 in Seattle.

Each year, participants identify various service opportunities along their route. In the past, participants have visited cancer patients to deliver chemo-care bags and have participated in community dinners, and cancer awareness presentations.

Addressing infants’ safe-sleep practices

The Warren City Health Department invites prospective and current parents, and grandparents to a free luncheon at the YWCA, 375 N. Park Ave., from noon to 2:30 p.m. June 11.

The luncheon will provide information about the safe-sleep practices for infants and have drawings for $25 Babies “R” Us gift cards and other infant-related items.

In Ohio, sleep-related infant deaths accounted for 830 deaths from 2006 to 2010, which is more than any other single cause except prematurity.

More than three infant deaths each week are sleep-related with 87 percent of them occurring before 6 months of age. For information, call 330-841-2596.

‘Healthy Eating: Portion Control’

Some Americans don’t know how much a serving is for their meals, which is a contributing factor to obesity in the nation. Mercy Health Youngstown, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners, will have its “Healthy Eating for You: Portion Control” presentation in the Warren Room at St. Joseph Warren Hospital, 667 Eastland Ave. SE, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. June 4. Bridget Lackey, a registered dietitian and community educator, will lead the informational discussion and answer questions.

The presentation will focus on what constitutes a single serving and how to manage portion sizes.
