Dems look to Ohio budget to restore certain union rights
COLUMBUS (AP) — Democrats in the Ohio Senate say they plan to offer changes to the state budget to allow independent home health care and child-care workers under contract with the state to unionize.
Their proposal comes after Republican Gov. John Kasich on Friday rescinded a pair of directives issued by his predecessor that allowed those workers to unionize.
Sen. Capri Cafaro of Liberty, D-32nd, said the move was wrong for Ohio. She says she and her colleagues will seek to restore the collective bargaining rights in an amendment to the proposed $71.5 billion, two-year state budget.
Her comments came today at a Senate Finance Committee meeting where the panel’s subcommittee leaders gave their reports on budget hearings.
The sweeping spending measure funds state operations for the two years beginning July 1.
