Company hopes to remove ruptured pipeline today
GOLETA, Calif.
Officials from Plains All American Pipeline say they hope the broken section of a pipeline that spilled oil along the California coast can be removed for investigation today.
The company on Monday downgraded the amount of oil that may have spilled. The new estimate of the worst-case volume of oil released is 101,000 gallons. That’s about 4,200 gallons less than previously thought.
Plains All American is still measuring the spill as it cleans up along the Santa Barbara County coastline and recovers oil from the pipeline.
Oil blackened area beaches and created a 10-square-mile slick in the ocean after the onshore pipeline ruptured May 19.
Officials say one sea lion, nine pelicans and untold numbers of fish have been killed.
Two public beaches are closed until June 4.
Plane cleared after anonymous threat
NEW YORK
An anonymous threat made against a Paris-to-Boston airliner has been deemed to be not credible, like threats made against planes heading to New York and New Jersey.
Massachusetts Port Authority spokesman Matthew Brelis says he doesn’t know the circumstances of the threat or if the plane was searched.
Anonymous telephone threats against commercial airliners caused a scare Monday involving four other international flights at airports in New York and New Jersey.
The FBI says in one instance, U.S. military jets escorted an Air France flight into New York City after someone claimed a chemical weapon was aboard the aircraft. It says the plane has been cleared.
Ellis Island museum reopening
BOONTON, N.J.
A new addition to Ellis Island’s Immigration Museum is having its grand opening next week after numerous delays after the destruction of Superstorm Sandy.
The Daily Record reports the opening of the Peopling of America Center marks the end of the second phase of construction for Phelps Construction Group.
The Boonton, N.J., company spent several years before and after the storm renovating, restoring and adding onto the site’s museum.
Preconstruction on the two-phase project began in 2011, but development halted in October 2012 when Sandy damaged the island. The devastation closed the island to the public and kept workers away for about a year.
