Federer upset about close fan encounter

PARIS

For Roger Federer, the menace did not come from the other side of the net.

After dispatching Colombian Alejandro Falla in straight sets, the 17-time Grand Slam winner was about to leave center court Sunday when a young man ran down the stands and made his way to the Swiss star unhindered. The fan brazenly put his hand across his shoulder to try and get a selfie with him.

Federer looked surprised, then a bit uncomfortable as he seemed to question with a hand gesture why the security guards did not intervene. One of them finally grabbed the man and took him away.

That was the only incident in an otherwise smooth start to the French Open for Federer, who advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 win over Falla.

Hamilton makes return tonight against Tribe

CLEVELAND

Josh Hamilton is getting another shot at redemption in baseball with an unlikely journey that has led back to the Texas Rangers.

After leaving for a big free agent contract with the Los Angeles Angels, the 2010 AL MVP had struggles on and off the field.

Hamilton, out of the majors since shoulder surgery in February, is now set for a Rangers reunion in Cleveland on Monday. That comes exactly four weeks after the Angels finalized a trade to basically give him back to their AL West rivals for little in return less than halfway into a $125 million, five-year deal.

Montgomerie wins Senior PGA title

FRENCH LICK, Ind.

Colin Montgomerie answered two front-nine challenges with birdies, then pulled away, shooting a 3-under 69 on Sunday to win the Senior PGA Championship by four strokes.

Montgomerie finished at 8-under 280 on The Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort to successfully defend his title and win for the third time in the last six senior major championships. The 51-year-old Scot won last year at Harbor Shores in Michigan, and also won the U.S. Senior Open in July in Oklahoma.

Montgomerie earned $495,000 and he made it look easy.

Esteban Toledo twice pulled within a shot on the front nine, but couldn’t keep up. Toledo shot a 69 to finish second. Woody Austin was another shot back after a 69, and Brian Henninger and Scott Verplank tied for fourth at 2 under. They each shot 71.

Montgomerie and Bernhard Langer have won four of the past five senior majors, with Jeff Maggert’s win last week in Alabama in the Regions Tradition the lone exception.

Playing in the final twosome with Montgomerie. Langer had a 74 to finish sixth at even par.

Vikings RB Peterson to skip OTAs

MINNEAPOLIS

The Minnesota Vikings will open their optional team practices this week without Adrian Peterson.

The star running back has told coach Mike Zimmer that he will not attend the three days of team work that begin Tuesday, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Sunday night. The person requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the issue.

Peterson did attend the optional workouts last summer while Zimmer was orienting himself in his first months on the job, but has skipped them in the past.

This time, however, could cost him a $250,000 workout bonus and comes in the context of his expressed unhappiness with the organization.
