Memorial Day events as submitted to The Vindicator. Unless otherwise noted, all events are Monday, the official holiday.

MAHONING county

Austintown: Austintown American Legion Memorial Post 301 will sponsor a parade beginning at 10:30 a.m., following a route from the Marc’s parking lot at Mahoning Avenue and Idaho Road to the Fitch High School Veterans Memorial. A commemorative service by the American Legion post and VFW Post 237, will begin at 11 a.m. Master of ceremonies, Post 301 commander Sam Swoger III, will introduce the featured speaker, Army retired command Sgt. John R. Balint Jr. All are welcome. To participate, call John R. Facemyer at 330-533-1611.

Boardman: The Boardman Kiwanis will host its 111th annual Memorial Day parade and service starting at Boardman Center Middle School at 10 a.m. Paul Rossi will be the grand marshal and featured speaker. William Wainio will give the invocation. Lt. Col. Bill Moss, USAF Retired, will lead the pledge of allegiance and place a wreath in honor of deceased veterans. Mark Luke of the Boardman Kiwanis will serve as master of ceremonies for the memorial service. The Boardman Spartan Marching Band will march and provide music for the service. Parade participants will include Boardman trustees, township officials, fire and police departments, the Boardman school board, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, Post 565 with commander John Malys with vehicles, riflemen and wagons, Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, Boardman Civic Association, Antique, Classic and Model T car clubs, ambulance companies and bicycles, passing out candy to children. In the event of rain, the service will be in the Center Middle School auditorium. Immediately after the parade, Boardman Park will host a program in its Maag Theatre to honor veterans.

Campbell: There will be a Memorial Day Service at 11 a.m. at the Campbell Memorial High School Veterans’ Monument. Guest speaker will be Anthony Traficanti, Mahoning County commissioner. Following the service, a luncheon will be served at the Community Center at Roosevelt Park. The events are sponsored by the American Legion Post 560.

Canfield: Memorial Day services in Canfield will include ceremonies at three locations. Commander Michael Kubitza of the Canfield American Legion Post 177 said events start at 10 a.m. with a ceremony at the gazebo on the Village Green with a prayer service. From there, participants will march down East Main Street to the Canfield East Cemetery. There will be a 21-gun salute at the cemetery followed by the last stop to the Wall of Honor, behind the Canfield Township Hall. Anyone with a used American flag can leave it in a container for proper disposal at the Canfield War Vet Museum, 23 E. Main St.

Lowellville: American Legion Lowellville Post 247 will host a ceremony at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Lowellville at 10 a.m., and will be followed by a short ceremony in the Poland Township Cemetery. The main ceremony will feature the American Legion Rifle Squad, the Mount Carmel Band, Mayor James Iudiciani and main speaker, former state Sen. Harry Meshel. North Jackson: North Jackson events begin at the Vietnam Memorial at the Jackson-Milton football field at 8:45 a.m. Parade marshal Fred Schrock will be honored; he is a Vietnam War veteran who has continued to patriotically serve the North Jackson community. His nephew, Michael Schrock, an Operation Desert Storm veteran, will speak. A parade will begin at 9 a.m. from the football field parking lot and will feature the Jackson-Milton Marching Band, Scouting units, local fire departments and civic organizations. The parade will proceed to the cemetery. Veterans and family members of those currently serving are encouraged to wear something signifying their branch of service. Poland: The 43rd Annual Memorial Day parade and memorial ceremonies, starting at 9 a.m., will be sponsored by Sons of The American Legion Mahoning Valley Squadron 15, American Legion Mahoning Valley Post 15 and American Legion Auxiliary Mahoning Valley Unit 15. A ceremony honoring “The Four Chaplains” will begin at 9 a.m. at the post home, 35 Cortland St. A parade will begin at 10 a.m. and travel down College Street, right on South Main Street, left on Riverside Drive and into the Riverside Cemetery. A brief ceremony will take place about 10:15 on the Main Street Bridge in honor of those lost at sea with full memorial services in Riverside Cemetery planned for 10:30. Timothy Espich, COO of the Ohio Department of Veterans Services, will be guest speaker, and state Sen. Joe Schiavoni of Boardman, D-33rd, will be speaker. Russ Beatty Sr. will serve as parade grand marshal. Pastor Ron Royalty of Poland Gospel Baptist Church is Chaplain of the Day. In case of inclement weather, ceremonies will take place in the Poland Middle School Gymnasium.

Struthers: Memorial Day services include these events: 8 a.m. at Beirut Memorial at Lake Hamilton; 9 a.m. at the Mahoning River under the bridge at state Route 616 in downtown Struthers; 10 a.m. at Struthers High School; and 11 a.m. at Lake Park Cemetery. Mike Briceland, retired U.S. Army, will speak at the school and the cemetery. For information call 330-755-2701.

Youngstown: The Golden Eagles of Smoky Hollow 59th annual War Memorial service will begin at 11:15 a.m. on the corner of Walnut Street and Rayen Avenue.

TRUMBULL county

Brookfield: A Memorial Day parade will begin at 10 a.m., starting at the site of the former middle school on Grove Street, continuing west and then south on state Route 7 to Brookfield Township cemetery. Featured speaker will be Brookfield High School alumnus Don Shaffer, a retired colonel of the USAF. A veterans memorial service will take place at the veterans memorial at the east end of the cemetery immediately after the parade. Those attending the service are invited to a community luncheon, courtesy of the Brookfield Ladies’ Fire Auxiliary, at the fire hall, 774 state Route 7, at the conclusion of the service.

Girard: The Girard Veterans Council, which includes the American Legion, VFW and Army-Navy Union, will host an 11 a.m. ceremony at Girard Cemetery. For information, call the Army-Navy Garrison at 330-545-0098.

Southington: The Southington American Legion Post 251 will sponsor a traditional Memorial Day Parade from the Chalker building on state Route 305 to Pinecrest Cemetery. A memorial service will take place at the cemetery. Organizations and individuals interested in participating should gather at the Chalker building at 10 a.m. The flag-raising will begin at 10:45 a.m., with the parade to commence at 11 a.m. For information, call 330-889-2113.

COLUMBIANA county

Columbiana: The American Legion will host a Memorial Day Parade at 10 a.m., traveling from Main Street to West Park Avenue to Firestone Cemetery.

MERCER county

Mercer, Pa: The Mercer Memorial Day 500 will take place primarily at the Mercer County Courthouse, 120 S. Diamond St. Events include: 8 a.m., registration at the post office for a 5K Race through the Flags starting at 8:30; 9 a.m., an opening ceremony, honoring of race winners and honoree introductions at the courthouse bandstand; 9 to 11 a.m., military expo, north side of courthouse; 9:30 to 11 a.m., veterans’ reception and prizes, south side of courthouse; concessions available 9:30 to noon; 10 to 11 a.m., showcase entertainer Brett Allen Morgan at the courthouse bandstand; 11 a.m., memorial parade; noon, memorial salute at the Mercer Citizens Cemetery, three blocks south of the courthouse.
