Mettille helps Mount repeat at nationals

Mount Union senior Tyler Mettille, a Canfield High graduate, helped the Purple Raiders repeat as Division III national champions in the 4x400-meter relay at Saturday’s meet at St. Lawrence University.

Mettille joined Chase Swisher, Tyler Sparks and Tyler Neff on the winning relay, which finished in a season-best time of 3:10.68.

Mettille also earned All-America honors in the open 400, running a 51.52 to place third. Mettille ends his career with 11 All-America finishes: three indoor and eight outdoor.

K.O. Drugs boxing sign-ups this Saturday

The K.O. Drugs High School Boxing Tournament will hold its final sign-ups on Saturday for the 2015 event.

Registration for Trumbull and Mercer County students will be held between 10 and 11 a.m. at Eastwood Mall’s Center Court, while Mahoning and Columbiana County students can sign-up between noon and 3 p.m. at the old South Range High School gym. Late registration will be held from noon to 3 p.m. on June 6 at the old South Range High gym.

A $25 entry fee and parental consent is required at weigh-in. The beginner boxing tournament runs on June 10, 17 and 24 at the old South Range High gym beginning at 7 p.m. For more information, contact Chuck Nelson at (330) 423-2203 or (330) 727-0932.

Ohio’s Sitz throws first no-no in MAC tourney

Ohio University’s Connor Sitz threw the first no-hitter in Mid-American Conference tournament history, beating Bowling Green 6-0 on Saturday.

The junior right-hander from Westerville struck out four and walked five in tossing the first no-no for Ohio since Bob White’s gem against Ohio Wesleyan in 1996 — and the first against a Division I team in program history.

Sitz (7-2) threw 126 pitches in the victory that sent the Bobcats (35-19) into the MAC title game for the first time since 1997. He struck out Greg Basalyga for the final out, setting off a celebration on the mound.

Mitch Longo homered for Ohio, which is a victory away from an NCAA tournament berth. The Bobcats will play the winner of the Ball State-Akron game in the championship Sunday.

Denver, Maryland to meet in lacrosse final

Wesley Berg scored his third goal with 1:57 into overtime, lifting Denver past Notre Dame 11-10 Saturday in the NCAA lacrosse semifinal.

Sophomore attacker Matt Rambo had four goals and two assists to help Maryland edge Johns Hopkins 12-11 in the NCAA lacrosse semifinal Saturday.

Rambo, who equaled his career high for goals and assists, snapped a 10-10 tie when he scored on a spin move with 9:59 left. He added another goal with 7:24 to play for the Terrapins (15-3), who will meet Denver (16-2) in Monday’s title game.

The No. 4 Pioneers (16-2), who have won 12 straight games. will make their first appearance in the final. They lost to eventual national champion Duke in last year’s semifinal.

The Terps, making their third championship-game appearance in five years, have not won a title since 1975.

A Lot wins Belmont’s Paradise Creek Stakes

A Lot, the 1-2 favorite, rolled to a 6 1/4-length victory Saturday in the $100,000 Paradise Creek Stakes for 3-year-olds on the turf at Belmont Park.

It was the first stakes victory for the colt trained by Bill Mott and ridden by John Velazquez. And he made it look easy.

A Lot was perched second most of the race outside the pacesetting Bridget’s Big Luvy. When Velazquez turned A Lot loose at the top of the stretch, it was over.

The time was 1:21.71 for seven furlongs on the firm course. A Lot paid $3.10, $2.10 and $2.10 for his third win in seven starts.
