America Makes, NASA team up for $2.25M 3-D challenge

America Makes and NASA are sponsoring a new $2.25 million competition to design and build a 3-D printed habitat for deep-space exploration, including the agency’s journey to Mars. The multi-phase 3-D Printed Habitat Challenge, part of NASA’s Centennial Challenges program, is designed to advance the additive-construction technology needed to create sustainable housing solutions for Earth and beyond. The first phase is a design competition, where participants are called to develop architectural concepts that take advantage of the unique capabilities 3-D printing offers.
The top 30 submissions will be judged and a prize purse of $50,000 will be awarded at the 2015 World Maker Faire in New York on Sept. 26 and 27.

YBI to host webinar

The Youngstown Business Incubator will host a webinar and panel discussion about entrepreneurship and 3-D printing at America Makes, 23 W. Boardman St., in downtown from 8 to 10 a.m. Wednesday.
The deadline to register is Tuesday. The cost is $25, and $15 for students.
Entrepreneurs, executives, venture capitalists, product designers, inventors and design and manufacturing engineers are encouraged to attend.

Chamber schedules ‘power luncheon’

ODNR issues 5 drilling permits

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued five horizontal-drilling permits in the Utica-shale region for the week ending May 16. No permits were issued in the Mahoning Valley. The rig count is at 25. Of the 1,902 total permits issued, there are 1,484 permits drilled, with 896 of them producing.
Pittsburgh TechFest planned for June 13
