St. Brendan church to honor pastor

YOUNGSTOWN

The parish community of St. Brendan Parish, 2800 Oakwood Ave., will honor and commemorate its pastor, Father William “Bill” Loveless, on June 7.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. Father Loveless was ordained June 7, 1975, by Bishop James W. Malone in St. Columba Cathedral and has served as associate and pastor in various churches throughout Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

He has served as pastor of St. Brendan Parish since 2011, and has been the spiritual advisor for the Cursillo movement. He has worked on further development of Hispanic ministry in his parish.

Father Loveless’ anniversary celebration will begin with Mass at 10 at St. Brendan Church, followed by a reception in Maxwell Hall. Family and special friends have been invited to join the parish congregation for this event. A parish gift and several musical tributes will be presented.

‘Feel the Spirit’ performance planned

BOARDMAN

The Chancel Choir of Westminster Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Drive, will present “Feel the Spirit” by John Rutter on Sunday at the 10:30 a.m. worship service.

The heritage of the African-American spiritual has fired the imagination of composers and performers for more than 100 years.

John Rutter, inspired by the vocal artistry of a mezzo soloist, wrote this cycle of spirituals for soloist, choir and orchestra.

Susan Shafer is the soloist accompanied by piano and clarinet with the choir joined by Dana School of Music students.

“Feel the Spirit” premiered in Carnegie Hall in June 2001.

In honor of Memorial Day, World War II Navy veteran Robert Thomas and his son, David Thomas, Marine veteran of the Gulf and Iraq wars, will present the colors, and the choir will open the service with Peter Wilhousky’s arrangement of “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
