Spring jazz concert to be May 29

The Boardman High School spring jazz concert will take place on May 29 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman High School Cafeteria.

Patrons are asked to enter through the gymnasium entrance at the north side of the building because there is a dance recital in the BPAC that night. Admission at the door is $3 for adults and $2 for students. Senior citizens are admitted free of charge. Pizza, popcorn, soft drinks and bottled water will be sold.

This culmination of another year for the jazz program at Boardman will feature the BHS jazz ensembles 1, 2 and 3 all under the direction of Thomas M. Ruggieri. The talents of the outgoing seniors will be highlighted.

Jazz Ensemble 3 selections will include “Bluesette” and “Evil Ways.” Jazz Ensemble 2 will play “Big Time Operator,” “Eleanor Rigby,” and “Moanin’.”

Jazz Ensemble 1 is the top group in the BHS Jazz Program. They will begin and end the program with selections to include Stevie Wonder’s “I Wish,” “The Wind Cries Mary,” “Haven’t Met You Yet” by Michael Buble, “Ran Kan Kan” by Tito Puente, “Try A Little Tenderness” as done by Otis Redding, and the Thelonius Monk jazz ballad “’Round Midnight.”

The seniors in the BHS jazz program will be prominently featured throughout the three bands’ performances. Eight of them have been in the program for the past four years.

The students recently returned from a short, but event-packed trip to New York City. Jazz ensemble 1 made its third appearance in the famous jazz club Swing 46. Jazz 2, jazz 1 and a small combo called Reverse Osmosis performed to an international audience on the deck of the USS Intrepid Air and Sea Museum. Jazz 1 continued its busy schedule with its annual spring appearance at the Jewish Community Center and a guest appearance at the Austintown Fitch High School jazz concert both on May 21.

The BHS summer jazz ensemble is slated to perform at the Warren Amphitheater on July 9, in Boardman Park on July 23 and at Waterfire Sharon on Aug. 22.
