SOLON

Sara Price went 4-for-4 with two doubles and a homer for Howland, which led 7-0 after two innings. Price scored four runs, drove in three and walked, while Hanah Kowach added four hits, including a homer, six RBIs and two runs. The Tigers will play Nordonia for the district title at 4:30 p.m. today at Solon High. Reann Litz singled, doubled, scored and drove in two runs and Mackenzie Maze had two hits and a run. Kowach pitched 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief, giving up four hits with a strikeout and no walks.

Hannah Perrine had a RBI single for Nordonia (21-6). For the Falcons (13-15), Sierra Pierce and McKenzie each had three hits while Alex Franken and Alyssa Winterburn had two. Bri Protain drove in two runs. The Falcons rallied for three runs in the seventh inning.

Canfield’s doubles team of freshman Timothy Cianciola and sophomore Robert Long won both their matches at first day of the district tournament to earn a state tournament berth. Canfield beat Solon’s top-seeded team of Nam Le and Vlad Rotnov 6-2, 6-4, then beat Walsh Jesuit’s second-seeded team of Connor Evans and Anthony Rozum 6-3, 6-3. The Cardinals will meet Westlake’s Cal Craven and Connor Michelich in Saturday’s semifinals to determine seeding.

DIVISION II

CORTLAND

Girard senior Caitlyn Trebella broke a district record in the pole vault to help the Indians take a 40-29 lead over Garfield after four events at Lakeview High School. Trebella cleared 10 feet, 6 inches, while Woodridge’s Emily Gillespie set the previous mark (9-0) in 2013. Girard senior Savannah Teter won the high jump, clearing 5 feet. On the boys side, Cardinal Mooney senior Dante Penza broke the district record in the discus with a throw of 162-5, besting the previous mark of 156-5 set by Crestwood’s Matt Monroe in 2013. United’s Riley Fillman shattered the long jump record with a leap of 22 feet, 8 1/4 inches. Pymatuning Valley’s Quintin Ratliff held the previous record of 21-11 1/2, set in 2012. Lakeview freshman Connor Greenwood won the pole vault (9-0) to help the Bulldogs take a 28-22 lead over United after four events.

DIVISION II

SALEM

West Branch senior Jake Zinni, a YSU football recruit, won the discus with a throw of 153-2 to help the Warriors pile up 23 points, good enough for second place after four events behind Field (26). In girls competition, Fairless leads South Range 20-19 after three events.
