The Austintown library hosted Sit N’ Stitch, a monthly craft program for adults, on May 8. Librarian Starr Jones, normally in charge of children programs at the library, led the class, bringing her own crocheted project for demonstration with her.

The class was filled with tips for better crocheting, knitting and various other home crafts.

Nancy Rine, one of the partipants that day, said she has been crocheting for many years.

With her she brought a special made double hooked crochet needle and her current project, an afghan made of 270 stitches.

Rine shared her learning experiences with knitting and crocheting.

“Years ago, when Austintown Fitch was still on Mahoning [Avenue] my friend and I went out and took a sewing course,” Rine said. “Straus’s [a knitting company that used to be in the area] was out there and I went out there a couple times to learn.”

Crocheting has become Rine’s hobby, but she started out knitting her most frequent projects, afghans.

“When I first started making afghans I knitted them,” Rine said. “There was one thing I couldn’t figure out and she showed me [how to crochet].”

Since Rine learned how to crochet she has continued to build on her skills, making more complex projects out of several different patterns.
