Canfield’s Tinkey headed to Mount Union

CANFIELD

Canfield senior Rachel Tinkey will continue her basketball career at Mount Union.

Tinkey, a four-year letterwinner, was named All-American Conference Red Division player of the year this season as well as second team all-district and honorable mention all-Ohio.

She is also a standout softball player, earning first team all-conference and first team all-district her first three seasons. Tinkey has a grade point average of 4.026.

Fitch’s Scott qualifies for D2 nationals

TIFFIN, OHIO

Tiffin junior Theresa Scott, a Fitch High graduate, qualified for the Division II outdoor track and field championships as a member of the Dragons’ 4x100-meter relay team.

Scott and her relay set the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record in the event with a time of 46.33 and also break Tiffin’s school record with a time of 45.94.

The national meet begins today and continues through Saturday at Grand Valley State University.

Softball all-star game set for June 16 at YSU

YOUNGSTOWN

The 12th annual Bill Sferra Fastpitch All-Star Classic is set for June 16 at the YSU softball complex.

The game features Mahoning County seniors against Trumbull County seniors. The doubleheader format begins at 4:30 p.m.

Franciscan’s Ledyard named top AD

STEUBENVILLE

Sports Faith International has named Franciscan University of Steubenville director of athletics, Chris Ledyard, their College Athletic Director of the Year.

He will be enshrined in the Sports Faith Hall of Fame in Chicago on Sunday.

Sports Faith International honors world-class athletes who are known for outstanding dedication to sports and their faith.

Ledyard will be inducted alongside 11 other Catholic athletes, coaches, and teams including Pro Basketball Hall of Famer Bob Cousy, Notre Dame Heisman Trophy winner John Lattner and five-time Olympic speed skating gold medalist Bonnie Blair.

Leonard, 2 Clippers on All-Defensive first team

NEW YORK

Defensive Player of the Year Kawhi Leonard of San Antonio was the leading vote-getter for the NBA’s All-Defensive first team, where he was joined by Los Angeles Clippers teammates Chris Paul and DeAndre Jordan.

Leonard received 116 first-team votes and 242 points Wednesday from a panel of 129 writers and broadcasters in the U.S. and Canada. Golden State’s Draymond Green was second with 229 points and 107 first-team votes.

Memphis’ Tony Allen was the other first team member. The second team was New Orleans’ Anthony Davis, Chicago’s Jimmy Butler, Golden State’s Andrew Bogut, Washington’s John Wall and San Antonio’s Tim Duncan.

Kentucky’s Calipari signs 1-year extension

LEXINGTON, Ky.

Kentucky coach John Calipari has signed a one-year contract extension through 2022 that will pay him a total of $54 million.

The contract was signed on May 13. It replaces the $52.5 million, seven-year agreement he signed last June.

Calipari’s latest contract extension follows Tuesday’s announcement that he wasn’t interested in the coaching vacancy with the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans or any other job.
