CANFIELD
The Rotary Club of Canfield sponsored its 35th annual Civic Day on May 1 at St. Michael Church.
Civic Day’s purpose is to provide Canfield High School government students with a chance to learn about the responsibilities of public officials in the community. Officeholders in city and township government participated along with school officials.
Teacher Mike Pavlansky’s government students were matched up with officials from city and township governments and the schools. They participated in a mock school board meeting in which they developed a proclamation, toured village schools and the police and fire departments.
At the municipal building, they took part in a mock city council meeting, and at the township hall, took part in a mock trustees meeting.
During a noon luncheon, students got the chance to learn about Rotary by participating in a mock meeting. State Sen. Joe Schiavoni of Boardman, D-33rd, spoke about the importance of serving.
At the event, Julie Kercher, coordinator of Operation Blessing, received the Non-Rotarian Vocational Award. The excellence in vocational service award is given by Rotary clubs worldwide to recognize non-Rotarians for their professional achievements or for their volunteerism. Rotary is made up of members who represent many occupations.
Canfield Rotary has 63 members and meets at noon Fridays at Fair Park. To become a member, email Gail McCullough at gailcfa@yahoo.com.
