City school board, ACTION fail to set date for meeting

YOUNGSTOWN — There won’t be a community meeting between a religious-based organization and the city school board.

“We were not getting the response that we are demanding,” said Rose Carter, executive director and lead organizer of the Alliance for Congregational Transformation Influencing Our Neighborhoods.

She sent a letter last month to board members inviting them to a meeting that was to be this week. Carter wanted the full board to attend to answer questions from parents and community members about the status of the school district and how it could be improved.

Carter said that because of requests by some school board members, the meeting was to be rescheduled to June 16. That’s not going to happen either.

“We’re a little bit frustrated with the fact that they don’t feel it’s important enough for them to answer the questions we’re asking,” Carter said. “To me, it’s just another way the board is not stepping up.”

Board President Brenda Kimble said she told Carter that the majority of the board members said they would attend the meeting.

“I told her I could not guarantee the full board,” Kimble said.
