The University of Akron has been awarded a $5 million grant to establish a national center for choreography.

The Plain Dealer reports the grant was given to the university Thursday by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and will help push plans for the choreography center forward.

The center is intended to be part of a network of facilities and resources for choreographers and dance companies who will be able to apply for studio time at the Center for Dance and Theatre.

Project member Pamela Young says two choreographers already have been chosen to inaugurate the center.

She says the center will garner national attention to Northeast Ohio as a major dance hub.
