Liberty FD announces 2 new safety programs

Staff report

LIBERTY

The Liberty Township Fire Department has announced two new programs dedicated to further enhancing the safety of township residents.

The first program is intended to assist fire personnel in identifying township residents who are physically challenged in the event of a fire or other emergency at their residence.

Fire Chief Gus Birch saw the need to address the issue to make responders aware as soon as possible in the event the physically challenged person is present.

Upon request, any physically challenged resident will be issued a window sticker to be placed at the primary entrance of the residence.

The second program is aimed at increasing the safety of township residents who walk along township roadways.

Firefighter/paramedic John Beard saw the need to add a level of protection for visibility for residents who walk or bike alongside the roadways.

Upon request, the fire department will issue a reflective safety vest that will make pedestrians more noticeable to motorists. Proof of residency must be provided.

The fire department still has smoke alarms and carbon-monoxide detectors to give to families in need as well. In certain concentrations, carbon monoxide is toxic for humans.
