Gabriel lifts Tennessee past Utah in NCAAs

KNOXVILLE, TENN.

Poland High graduate Erin Gabriel gave up one run in four innings to help No. 8 Tennessee defeat Utah 3-1 on Sunday to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals for the fourth straight year.

Gabriel gave up two hits, struck out four and walked two. She was coming off a one-hitter on Friday with 13 strikeouts in the Volunteers’ 2-0 win over Longwood.

Tennessee (45-14) will host No. 9 Floida State in the Knoxville Super Regional. Dates and game times will be announced later.

Austintown Fitch tops Mooney baseball

AUSTINTOWN

Jared Kapturasky had two hits, a run and a RBI and Derek Gunter singled, doubled and scored for the Austintown Fitch High baseball team, which defeated Cardinal Mooney 8-5 on Sunday.

Patrick Gerberry added a hit and two RBIs for the Falcons, who scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-3 lead. Derek Gunter started and gave up one hit over three innings, striking out three without a walk. Reliever Brian Beany got the win.

For Mooney, Trent Humphreys had two hits, including a triple, and two runs. Aaron Woodberry added a double and two RBIs and Devin Curd had a double and three RBIs.

Seven from GYTOA chosen for state meet

COLUMBUS

Seven members of the Greater Youngstown Track Officials Association were chosen for the state track and field meet on June 5-6 at Ohio State.

They are announcer Andris Balputnis, umpires Peggy Celedonia and Brian Claflin, finish line coordinator Ed Katzman, long jump official Karen Sapp, pole vault official Deb Satterfield and crew chief Ron Weaver.

Howland grad Price helps lift Cal U

CALIFORNIA, PA.

Howland High graduate Emily Price went 1-for-4 to help the top-seeded California University of Pennsylvania softball team captured the NCAA Super Atlantic regional championship and advance to the NCAA championships for the sixth time in school history on Saturday with a 6-2 extra-inning victory against second-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan at Lilley Field.

The No. 21 Vulcans (41-11) will face No. 4 Dixie State (Utah) on Thursday in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Price, a freshman shortstop, is batting .384 in 52 starts this season.

Canfield’s Kayley Keller has success at UNOH

Canfield High School graduate Kayley Keller finished an impressive sophomore season on the University of Northwestern Ohio softball team.

Keller hit .356 with 12 doubles, five home runs, and 26 RBIs. She led the Racers with a .726 slugging percentage.

Buescher rallies to win Xfinity race

NEWTON, Iowa

Chris Buescher pulled away on a restart in a green-white-checkered finish Sunday to win the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at the Iowa Speedway.

Buescher raced to his first victory of the season to give Roush-Fenway Racing its fifth Iowa win.

Chase Elliott appeared poised for an easy win before a late caution set up overtime. Buescher was the beneficiary, and he took advantage with a perfectly executed restart.

Elliott finished second and Erik Jones was third, followed by Brian Scott and Ryan Blaney.

Penske wants Blaney in full-time Cup ride

CONCORD, N.C.

Roger Penske wants Ryan Blaney to run a full NASCAR Sprint Cup season in 2016 with the Wood Brothers.

Blaney, a Team Penske development driver and the son of Hartford native Dave Blaney, has been farmed out to the Wood Brothers for about 18 Cup races this year. Blaney has made four starts so far this season and finished a career-best fourth at Talladega three weeks ago.
