Bridge to neighborhood along Lake Erie reopens

The only bridge leading to a cluster of homes on a tiny island along Lake Erie in northern Ohio has reopened just days after it was shut down over safety concerns.

The closure of the Harbor Island Causeway meant the only way residents living in the 30 homes on the island could get out is by boat or a pedestrian bridge.

A Catawba Island official says police shut down the bridge Thursday night after getting calls that said the structure looked unsafe.

The general manager of a club that maintains the bridge tells The Blade newspaper in Toledo that crews made repairs to the bridge over the weekend.

Authorities said a boat had been on standby to take the stranded residents to the hospital if needed.
