Man jailed in death of 15-year-old cousin

WARREN

Thomas A. Catalde Jr. is in the Trumbull County Jail without bond after his arraignment Thursday on one count of reckless homicide.

Catalde, 28, of Ruth Avenue and Nelson Mosier Road, both in Leavittsburg, was arrested Wednesday. A judge in Warren Municipal Court entered a not-guilty plea.

Catalde is charged with shooting his cousin, Jesse Hayes, 15, of Parma, in the face Saturday at the Ruth Avenue address while showing him a shotgun he recently purchased.

Catalde told Warren Township police the shooting was an accident and that he didn’t know the shotgun was loaded when he pointed it at his cousin and pulled the trigger.

Hayes, a student at Parma Senior High School, died two days later at a Cleveland hospital.

Vehicle stolen

Township police are searching for suspects after someone reportedly stole a family’s vehicle out of their driveway Wednesday.

When police were dispatched to Maple Drive and Market Street Wednesday for reports of men looking into cars, they reportedly got a call about a minivan being taken from a Maple Drive residence.

The victims reported to police that they had returned from a trip minutes before, leaving the keys and their luggage in the van, when their 8-year-old son noticed someone taking the 2001 dark blue Dodge Caravan from their driveway.

Felony-assault charge

A Campbell man faces a felony assault charge after he reportedly struck his ex-girlfriend with his car.

The victim reported to police that Boston Walker, 25, came to her Schenley Avenue apartment Tuesday and hit her with his SUV after the two got into an argument.

A neighbor also reported that he saw Walker try to run over the victim. Walker was arrested Wednesday and taken to the Mahoning County jail.

Sentenced in shooting

WARREN

Kevin Gaines, 24, of Union Street and Southwest Boulevard, will spend 11 years in prison for shooting a city man, 23, in the back Dec. 13, 2014, on Arnold Drive Southwest in the Highland Homes apartments.

The man spent six days in the hospital recovering from his injuries.

Gaines received his sentence Wednesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court, where he was convicted at trial of two counts of felonious assault. The second count was for a woman who was with the victim but was not hit by the gunfire.

The victims said they gave a man a ride to the Highland Homes about midnight after leaving a wedding. The man spoke to someone at an apartment, and they left but made a wrong turn on the way out and were confronted by Gaines in the apartment parking lot.

Poland car break-ins

Police are investigating a series of car break-ins in the township.

Victims from Heatherbrae, Denver and Diana drives, Dobbins and Miller roads, and Eastbrooke and Olde Charted trails reported break-ins into their vehicles. Missing items include money, cigarettes, credit and debit cards, a driver’s license and a phone.
