SECTIONAL TOURNAMENTS Division II
BOARDMAN
Cardinal Mooney’s Rich Hill grabbed the singles spot for next week’s district tournament in Canton on Thursday when he defeated fellow senior Carli Sebest of Poland, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3. Sebest was trying to become the first female player to qualify for districts in boys tennis in a number of years. Both players advanced Wednesday to Thursday’s quarterfinals, setting up the match with a spot in Saturday’s semifinals and finals on the line. By Ohio High School Athletic Association rule, a female can play on a boys tennis team as long as she didn’t play girls tennis the previous fall. Sebest ran cross country in the fall. She was Poland’s No. 2 singles player most of the spring. Hill was the sectional tournament’s fourth-seeded singles player.
Division I
CANTON
Boardman’s Kris Santilli earned a district berth Thursday with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over GlenOak’s Nick Comune. The Spartans’ Donnie Barrett and Brian Hirschl lost on Thursday. The third-seeded Barrett fell to Jackson’s Danny Thomas 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (1). Hirschl fell 6-2, 6-0 to second-seeded Jake Pukys of Louisville. Santilli will meet top-seeded Joey Thomas of Jackson in a semifinal on Saturday, but is assured a district berth no matter what happens in the semifinals and finals.
