Monday Night Writers meeting set for May 18

The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be May 18 from 6-8 p.m. at Peaberry’s Caf , located at 4350 Boardman-Canfield Road in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories,” the two-hour sessions include a mix of writing exercises, information on the creative and business aspects of writing, and group feedback on works-in-progress. Linda Porter set to speak on May 18

Linda Porter, club secretary, is this month’s speaker at the Youngstown Chapter of International Torch Clubs dinner-discussion meeting at 6 p.m. on May 18. Miss Porter will deliver a paper on the fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, accompanied by a visual presentation. The meeting will be in Kilcawley Center, Bresnahan Rooms I and II, on the campus of Youngstown State University. The public is invited to attend. Rossi to be guest speaker

Paul Rossi of Boardman will be the main speaker on May 18 for the World War II Heritage Society at AlaCarte Catering in Canfield. A buffet dinner will precede the presentation with cost of $14 per guest at 6:30 p.m. Reservations must be made with David Frank at 330 757-0515 by May 15. The Youngstown area will be hosting Slovak filmmaker Dusan Hudec, director of “The Final Mission”. He is currently touring the country and introducing his documentary on the Slovak villagers’ heroic rescue of Allied airmen downed in the Slovak countryside. The date is May 16 at The First Presbyterian Church, located at 201 Wick Ave., at 12 p.m. Parking and admission is free. Parking available in the church lot adjoining the Masonic lodge.

Free event at the Rust Belt Theater Company

The Rust Belt Theater Company will combine two of its annual events for an evening of music, spoken word and repurposed artwork, to celebrate the LGBT community. The event will take place from 6-10 p.m. on May 15 and 16. The art sale, featuring locally made, recycled jewelry, will begin each night at 6 p.m. Performances will commence each night at 8 p.m., featuring musical selections from “When I Knew...and How It Saved Me,” a production that was designed to bring awareness to the LGBT community. Performers will include Marisa Zamary, Kage Coven, Nicole Zayas, Joyce Jones, Terri MacSkimming, Robert Dennick Joki and more. A large collection of “coming out” stories, as well as testimonies from LGBT parents and allies will be on display in the lobby each night, as well. Admission to this event is free. The Rust Belt Theater Company is located in the Calvin Center, at 755 Mahoning Avenue, just outside of downtown Youngstown.

Canfield Cemetery tour to be May 17

The Canfield Heritage Foundation has recently announced a guided walk through the Canfield Cemetery on May 17. The event, hosted by renowned local historian Wendell Lauth, will start at 2 p.m. at the Canfield East Cemetery on East Main Street (Route 224). Enter the main entrance, proceed through and park at the exit. Gather in front of the mausoleum to begin. In case of rain, the tour will be moved to May 31. This walking tour includes the burial sites of many of Canfield’s most noted citizens and veterans. A $5 donation is requested, children are free with an adult. All monetary donations help support the Canfield Heritage Foundation, which presently operates the Loghurst Farm and Museum.

YMCA set to host job skills workshop on May 21

As part of its monthly Lunch and Learn series, the YWCA of Youngstown will host a Job Skills workshop from 12-1 p.m. on May 21. Experts from Ohio Means Jobs will provide information on resume writing and interviewing skills. The cost is $10 per person, which includes lunch. Registration is required by May 18. Safe Sitter classes set for this summer

Safe Sitter teaches boys and girls ages 11-13 how to be ideal babysitters. The two-day course covers basic first aid, rescue breathing, accident prevention, childcare tips, what to do if a child chokes and how and when to call for help. Cost for the program is $28.50 and scholarships are available for those who meet financial eligibility requirements. Classes are from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. both days and will take place June 24 and 25 and July 22 and 23 at St. Joseph Warren Hospital, and July 8 and 9 and Aug. 5 and 6 at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. Art classes by Brenda Myers Cohen for the month of May

During the month of May, artist Brenda Myers Cohen will offer a series of art classes in conjunction with the YWCA of Youngstown’s annual art show. Classes will be from 10 a.m. until noon on May 6, 13, 20 and 27 at the Senior Center, located at 1110 Fifth Ave. Cohen will instruct participants in the art of making a 5-inch by 7-inch project using watercolors on rice paper or a collage. The resulting artworks will be donated to the Women Artists: A Celebration! Silent Auction. Pieces will be auctioned at the June 20 Preview Party, and available for sale throughout the exhibit. Proceeds will benefit the YWCA Housing programs. The cost is $6 per person, payable at the beginning of the class. All supplies are included. Registration is not required. Get golf ready: adult clinics

PGA professionals will show you ways to play by combining fun, friends and fitness. Put your skills into action in a casual, friendly setting at Mill Creek Golf Course on May 20 and 27 at 6 p.m. The cost is $25 for one clinic, $45 for two clinics, $60 for three clinics and $100 for seven.

Junior golf clinics

Pre-shot routines and alignment to various targets will be emphasized, along with swing fundamentals, at Mill Creek Golf Course on May 17, 24 and 31 at 1 p.m. Range and course time vary with age and skill level. The cost is $15 per session.

MetroParks Farm will host a guided tractor wagon tour of the farm leaving every half hour on May 31 from 1-4 p.m. Donations will be accepted and there is a craft fee of $1.

Neighborhood Ministries is sseeking churches to provide free meals

Neighborhood Ministries, a sponsor for the Summer Food Service Program, is seeking churches or organizations to join in providing free meals to children ages 18 and under who live in the Youngstown area. The meals are provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the Ohio Department of Education from June 8 – Aug. 21. Sailing Lessons at MCCTC

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic set for July 13

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Youngstown Country Club on July 13. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle.

Cardinal 5K doughnut run

The Cardinal 5K doughnut run will take place on May 25 at 11 a.m. at Cardinal Stadium. A munchkin run will also be taking place for children ages 10-years-old and younger. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. All proceeds go to the athletics of the Canfield Cardinals. The price is $25 and children are free.

Simply Slavic call for vendors

The fifth annual Simply Slavic festival will be on June 20 from 12-11 p.m. on Federal Plaza East. Organizers are seeking authentically Slavic retail, craft, fine art and food vendors for its marketplace and food tents. Simply Slavic has vending space for 15 food vendors and 10 marketplace vendors who will provide a variety of Slavic merchandise and foods for patrons during the festival. The confirmation deadline for previous vendors is April 15. Applications from new vendors will be accepted after this date, but questions are welcome at any time. Gamblers Anonymous

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). The Ursuline Center announces 2015 Guided Labyrinth Walk Schedule

The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, has announced its 2015 Guided Labyrinth Walk schedule. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20-30 minutes. The walks are as follows: June 9 at 6:30 p.m. - Celebrating Fatherhood; July 14 at 6:30 p.m. - Celebrating Families; Aug. 11 at 6:30 p.m. - Welcoming the Stranger; Sept. 8 at 6:30 p.m. - Celebrating Peace; and Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. - Celebrating the Feast of St. Francis, Showing Solidarity with the Poor.

The YWCA Women Artists: A Celebration! Annual Art Exhibition showcases works by local, regional and national women artists, age 18 and older. Entry forms are available by calling 330-746-6361, ext. 102 or at ywca.org/youngstown. They are due no later than March 30. Artists may enter a maximum of five entries. There is a nonrefundable fee of $10 per entry or $45 for five entries. Entry is by CD only. This year’s juror is Susan Talbot-Stanaway, former director of the Zanesville Museum of Art, Zanesville. A preview party for the show will take place from 7-9 p.m. on June 20, at the YWCA. Proceeds from the art show benefit the YWCA Housing Programs.
