Chaney class of 1965 to have reunion

The Chaney High School Class of 1965 50th annual reunion will take place at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman on July 31. The cost, which includes dinner, is $40 per person.

The class will also host a picnic on Aug. 31 at Slippery Rock Pavillion in Millcreek Park. The cost for the picnic is $10 per person. Boardman High School Orchestras to present spring concert Wednesday

The award-winning Boardman High School symphony, chamber and classical Orchestras will present their annual Spring Orchestra Concert on May 20 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman Performing Arts Center. Admission is a $3 donation for adults and a $1 donation for students. Pre-schoolers and senior citizens are admitted free of charge. The Boardman Orchestra program is under the direction of Michele Prokop, Bill Amendol and Tim Tuite.

Monday Night Writers meeting set for May 18

The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be May 18 from 6-8 p.m. at Peaberry’s Caf , located at 4350 Boardman-Canfield Road in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories,” the two-hour sessions include a mix of writing exercises, information on the creative and business aspects of writing, and group feedback on works-in-progress. Linda Porter set to speak on May 18

Linda Porter, club secretary, is this month’s speaker at the Youngstown Chapter of International Torch Clubs dinner-discussion meeting at 6 p.m. on May 18. Miss Porter will deliver a paper on the fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, accompanied by a visual presentation. The meeting will be in Kilcawley Center, Bresnahan Rooms I and II, on the campus of Youngstown State University. The public is invited to attend. Rossi to be guest speaker

Paul Rossi of Boardman will be the main speaker on May 18 for the World War II Heritage Society at AlaCarte Catering in Canfield. A buffet dinner will precede the presentation with cost of $14 per guest at 6:30 p.m. Reservations must be made with David Frank at 330 757-0515 by May 15.

The Youngstown area will be hosting Slovak filmmaker Dusan Hudec, director of “The Final Mission”. He is currently touring the country and introducing his documentary on the Slovak villagers’ heroic rescue of Allied airmen downed in the Slovak countryside. The date is May 16 at The First Presbyterian Church, located at 201 Wick Ave., at 12 p.m.

Parking and admission are free. Parking available in the church lot adjoining the Masonic lodge.

Free event at the Rust Belt Theater Company

The Rust Belt Theater Company will combine two of its annual events for an evening of music, spoken word and repurposed artwork, to celebrate the LGBT community. The event will take place from 6-10 p.m. on May 15 and 16.

The art sale, featuring locally made, recycled jewelry, will begin each night at 6 p.m. Performances will commence each night at 8 p.m., featuring musical selections from “When I Knew...and How It Saved Me,” a production that was designed to bring awareness to the LGBT community. Performers will include Marisa Zamary, Kage Coven, Nicole Zayas, Joyce Jones, Terri MacSkimming, Robert Dennick Joki and more. A large collection of “coming out” stories, as well as testimonies from LGBT parents and allies will be on display in the lobby each night, as well. Admission to this event is free. The Rust Belt Theater Company is located in the Calvin Center, at 755 Mahoning Avenue, just outside of downtown Youngstown.

Spaghetti dinner at Bethel Lutheran Church

Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Ave. in Boardman, is having a spaghetti dinner on May 17 from 12:30-3:30 p.m. The dinner includes pasta, meatballs, salad, bread, dessert and a drink. Adults are $8 and children under 12 are $4. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Fowler earns degree

Elizabeth Fowler, a 2010 graduate of Boardman High School, recently earned a Masters Degree in Social Work, having completed the accelerated Joint Master of Social Work Program by the University of Akron and Cleveland State University.

YMCA set to host job skills workshop on May 21

As part of its monthly Lunch and Learn series, the YWCA of Youngstown will host a Job Skills workshop from 12-1 p.m. on May 21. Experts from Ohio Means Jobs will provide information on resume writing and interviewing skills. The cost is $10 per person, which includes lunch. Registration is required by May 18. F5RS rabbit adoption open house

DSAV sponsers bicycle camp for individuals with disabilities

The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley is now accepting applications for a bicycle camp for persons with disabilities June 15-19 at Boardman Glenwood Middle School. This five-day camp is requiring riders to attend one 75-minute session per day, The cost is $75. To be eligible, riders must be at least 8-years-old, have a disability and be able to walk without an assistive device such as a walker or cane. Riders must be able to side-step quickly to both sides. Riders must have a minimum inseam measurement of 20 inches and weigh no more than 220 pounds. Log onto DSAV.org for an application to the iCan Bike program. Space is limited and registration deadline is May 30.

Safe Sitter classes set for this summer

Safe Sitter teaches boys and girls ages 11-13 how to be ideal babysitters. The two-day course covers basic first aid, rescue breathing, accident prevention, childcare tips, what to do if a child chokes and how and when to call for help. Cost for the program is $28.50 and scholarships are available for those who meet financial eligibility requirements. Classes are from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. both days and will take place June 24 and 25 and July 22 and 23 at St. Joseph Warren Hospital, and July 8 and 9 and Aug. 5 and 6 at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. Art classes by Brenda Myers Cohen for the month of May

During the month of May, artist Brenda Myers Cohen will offer a series of art classes in conjunction with the YWCA of Youngstown’s annual art show. Classes will be from 10 a.m. until noon on May 6, 13, 20 and 27 at the Senior Center, located at 1110 Fifth Ave. Cohen will instruct participants in the art of making a 5-inch by 7-inch project using watercolors on rice paper or a collage. The resulting artworks will be donated to the Women Artists: A Celebration! Silent Auction. Pieces will be auctioned at the June 20 Preview Party, and available for sale throughout the exhibit. Proceeds will benefit the YWCA Housing programs. The cost is $6 per person, payable at the beginning of the class. All supplies are included. Registration is not required. Sensory story time

Join the Boardman Llibrary for a family story time for children of all ages with a sensory focus on May 23 at 2 p.m. This program is designed for children with different needs, including those with autism, speech/language delays, cognitive impairments, AD/HD and other special needs and challenges. Night owl story time

There will be an evening story time for children ages 3-5 at the Boardman library on May 12, 19 and 26 at 6 p.m. The May 5 event will feature stories focusing on Mother’s Day. Each child must be accompanied by an adult in this 30-minute program featuring finger plays, stories and a craft activity.

Neighborhood Ministries is sseeking churches to provide free meals

Neighborhood Ministries, a sponsor for the Summer Food Service Program, is seeking churches or organizations to join in providing free meals to children ages 18 and under who live in the Youngstown area. The meals are provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the Ohio Department of Education from June 8 – Aug. 21. Sailing Lessons at MCCTC

Chuck E. Cheese story time and library fundraiser

There will be a special story time at 10 a.m. on May 27 before the store opens with Chuck E. Cheese at the Boardman store. This story time will be the fourth Wednesday of every month in 2015. Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s

This event, for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months old, will take place on May 16 and 22 at 10 a.m. and will include twenty minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs, and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic set for July 13

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Youngstown Country Club on July 13. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle.

Simply Slavic call for vendors

The fifth annual Simply Slavic festival will be on June 20 from 12-11 p.m. on Federal Plaza East. Organizers are seeking authentically Slavic retail, craft, fine art and food vendors for its marketplace and food tents. Simply Slavic has vending space for 15 food vendors and 10 marketplace vendors who will provide a variety of Slavic merchandise and foods for patrons during the festival. Gamblers Anonymous

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). The Ursuline Center announces 2015 Guided Labyrinth Walk Schedule

The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, has announced its 2015 Guided Labyrinth Walk schedule. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20-30 minutes. This year’s first guided walk is April 19 at 2 p.m. and offers an additional feature. The event starts with a presentation on the “Spirituality of Labyrinths” in The Ursuline Center, then moves outdoors for a walk celebrating the Earth. Friends Specialty at the Garden Caf opens at Fellows Riverside Gardens

Friends Specialty at the Garden Caf in Mill Creek MetroParks Fellows Riverside Gardens has officially opened for business. The Garden Caf has been refreshed and newly updated and will offer an eclectic selection of teas, locally roasted coffee, a locally sourced lunch menu, desserts and other libations all served with a complimentary view of stunning Lake Glacier. The Caf is open to the public from Tuesday through Sunday during the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for pastries, coffee and tea.
