Chaney class of 1965 to have reunion

The Chaney High School Class of 1965 50th annual reunion will take place at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman on July 31. The cost, which includes dinner, is $40 per person. The class will also host a picnic on Aug. 31 at Slippery Rock Pavillion in Millcreek Park. The cost for the picnic is $10 per person. Monday Night Writers meeting set for May 18

The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be May 18 from 6-8 p.m. at Peaberry’s Caf , located at 4350 Boardman-Canfield Road in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories,” the two-hour sessions include a mix of writing exercises, information on the creative and business aspects of writing, and group feedback on works-in-progress. Linda Porter set to speak on May 18

Linda Porter, club secretary, is this month’s speaker at the Youngstown Chapter of International Torch Clubs dinner-discussion meeting at 6 p.m. on May 18. Miss Porter will deliver a paper on the fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, accompanied by a visual presentation. The meeting will be in Kilcawley Center, Bresnahan Rooms I and II, on the campus of Youngstown State University. The public is invited to attend. Rossi to be guest speaker

Paul Rossi of Boardman will be the main speaker on May 18 for the World War II Heritage Society at AlaCarte Catering in Canfield. The Youngstown area will be hosting Slovak filmmaker Dusan Hudec, director of “The Final Mission”. He is currently touring the country and introducing his documentary on the Slovak villagers’ heroic rescue of Allied airmen downed in the Slovak countryside. The date is May 16 at The First Presbyterian Church, located at 201 Wick Ave., at 12 p.m. Parking and admission is free. Parking available in the church lot adjoining the Masonic lodge.

Free event at the Rust Belt Theater Company

The Rust Belt Theater Company will combine two of its annual events for an evening of music, spoken word and repurposed artwork, to celebrate the LGBT community. The event will take place from 6-10 p.m. on May 15 and 16. The art sale, featuring locally made, recycled jewelry, will begin each night at 6 p.m. Performances will commence each night at 8 p.m., featuring musical selections from “When I Knew...and How It Saved Me,” a production that was designed to bring awareness to the LGBT community. Performers will include Marisa Zamary, Kage Coven, Nicole Zayas, Joyce Jones, Terri MacSkimming, Robert Dennick Joki and more. A large collection of “coming out” stories, as well as testimonies from LGBT parents and allies will be on display in the lobby each night, as well. Admission to this event is free. The Rust Belt Theater Company is located in the Calvin Center, at 755 Mahoning Avenue, just outside of downtown Youngstown.

Austintown Quiz Bowl team finishes fifth

Students from Austintown have an opportunity to compete with 272 teams across the nation in the academic realm. The Quiz Bowl team finished fifth in the Mahoning County League Tournament. The team is fundraising in hope of competing in Illinois.

Gamblers Anonymous

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Austintown parents of incoming kindergarten students are invited to participate in two sessions with their child in June. The math and reading sessions will take place at Austintown Elementary School from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Participants will learn games to build foundational skills and will receive materials to use at home during the summer. Children will also have the opportunity to eat a complimentary breakfast and lunch. Due to limited space only one parent or guardian may attend; also, siblings are not permitted to attend. If a parent or guardian is unable to attend another adult may participate in place of a parent. Children must be registered for kindergarten in order to participate in this program. Registration forms are available at AES and must be returned by May 22.

YMCA set to host job skills workshop May 21

As part of its monthly Lunch and Learn series, the YWCA of Youngstown will host a Job Skills workshop from 12-1 p.m. on May 21. Experts from Ohio Means Jobs will provide information on resume writing and interviewing skills. The cost is $10 per person, which includes lunch. Registration is required by May 18. Safe Sitter classes set for this summer

Safe Sitter teaches boys and girls ages 11-13 how to be ideal babysitters. The two-day course covers basic first aid, rescue breathing, accident prevention, childcare tips, what to do if a child chokes and how and when to call for help. Cost for the program is $28.50 and scholarships are available for those who meet financial eligibility requirements. Classes are from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. both days and will take place June 24 and 25 and July 22 and 23 at St. Joseph Warren Hospital, and July 8 and 9 and Aug. 5 and 6 at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. Art classes by Brenda Myers Cohen for the month of May

During the month of May, artist Brenda Myers Cohen will offer a series of art classes in conjunction with the YWCA of Youngstown’s annual art show. Classes will be from 10 a.m. until noon on May 20 and 27 at the Senior Center, located at 1110 Fifth Ave. Cohen will instruct participants in the art of making a 5-inch by 7-inch project using watercolors on rice paper or a collage. The resulting artworks will be donated to the Women Artists: A Celebration! Silent Auction. Pieces will be auctioned at the June 20 Preview Party, and available for sale throughout the exhibit. Proceeds will benefit the YWCA Housing programs. The cost is $6 per person, payable at the beginning of the class. All supplies are included. Registration is not required. Community garden coming to Boardman

Boardman Township Park, in partnership with 4H Mahoning County, is announcing Boardman’s first community garden, located in the Historic Southern Stables on Washington Boulevard. Community gardens allow you to experience the joys of gardening, promote healthy eating habits and build new relationships with others in the community. Registration for the 10 foot x 20 foot garden plots began April 13 at the Boardman Park Office, located at 375 Boardman-Poland Road, and are available for a fee of $25. Your fee includes the garden plot, water and periodic classes/instructions on gardening. Due to the limited number of plots available, registration is limited to Boardman residents only and only one plot per gardener/family. Garden season begins May 1 and runs through Nov. 15. Landscapes on the Hudson

Get golf ready: adult clinics

Neighborhood Ministries is sseeking churches to provide free meals

Neighborhood Ministries, a sponsor for the Summer Food Service Program, is seeking churches or organizations to join in providing free meals to children ages 18 and under who live in the Youngstown area. The meals are provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the Ohio Department of Education from June 8 – Aug. 21. Simply Slavic call for vendors

The fifth annual Simply Slavic festival will be on June 20 from 12-11 p.m. on Federal Plaza East. Organizers are seeking authentically Slavic retail, craft, fine art and food vendors for its marketplace and food tents. Simply Slavic has vending space for 15 food vendors and 10 marketplace vendors who will provide a variety of Slavic merchandise and foods for patrons during the festival. Friends Specialty at the Garden Caf in Mill Creek MetroParks Fellows Riverside Gardens has officially opened for business. The Garden Caf has been refreshed and newly updated and will offer an eclectic selection of teas, locally roasted coffee, a locally sourced lunch menu, desserts and other libations all served with a complimentary view of stunning Lake Glacier. The Caf is open to the public from Tuesday through Sunday during the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for pastries, coffee and tea.
