Shooting near YSU

YOUNGSTOWN

A drive-by shooting in traffic at Elm Street and Madison Avenue near Youngstown State University dorms injured one man, who crashed his SUV into the front of Dorian Books at that intersection.

Vindicator News Partner 21 WFMJ-TV reports the victim was in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital on Wednesday night.

YSU police got the call at 5:42 p.m. for a traffic accident and shots being fired.

After the white SUV crashed into the bookstore, on the southwest corner of Elm, the shooters, who were in a white SUV or van, took off down Broadway, firefighters in Station No. 7, caddy-corner from the store, told police.

Dorian co-owner Rodd Coonce told WFMJ that he was walking a customer to his door when he heard four or five gunshots.

Coonce told WFMJ that the van made a U-turn at the corner of Elm and Madison, drove back, and its occupants fired more shots into the SUV.

He said a car pulled up and took the victim to St. Elizabeth’s.
