It’s a surprise birth for college’s goat-, sheep-guarding donkey
SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I.
The University of Rhode Island may have a new guard for its animal herd after a baby donkey was unexpectedly born.
Jenny, one of the university’s two guard donkeys, gave birth to the foal in late April at the school’s Peckham Farm.
The university uses the donkeys to protect its goats and sheep from coyotes and feral dogs. The animals are part of the university’s animal science and pre-veterinary classes.
URI senior Kathryn Voelkner says she found the foal while feeding the two donkeys and saw it take its first steps. The birth came as a surprise, since both older donkeys are female.
Jenny came to the farm last May. University officials believe she already was pregnant when they acquired her, since donkeys can be pregnant for about a year.
Teen who spray-painted prom invite on Idaho cliff is sought
BOISE, Idaho
Authorities are looking for a teen who wanted a date with Destiny and hoped to get it by spray-painting a prom proposal on an Idaho cliffside.
The Idaho Statesman reported that the message “Destiny, Prom?” was painted in large pink and blue letters on the side of the Black Cliffs, in a popular rock-climbing spot, east of Boise. The Ada County sheriff’s office is searching for the culprit.
The person could face a misdemeanor charge of injury by graffiti, which is punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of $1,000.
A federal charge also is possible because the U.S. Bureau of Land Management owns the area. The culprit also would be responsible for the cost of cleanup.
Indiana teen takes his great-grandma, 93, to prom
SEYMOUR, Ind.
An Indiana teenager who took his 93-year-old great-grandmother to his junior prom says he had a great time, even though her early bedtime nearly cut the night short.
Drew Holm says his classmates thought it “was pretty cool” that he asked Kathryn Keith to last Friday’s Crothersville High School junior prom.
Holm picked Keith up in her Cadillac for the dance in Seymour, about 60 miles south of Indianapolis.
Keith, who wore a blue dress, told the Seymour Tribune she’s proud that he asked her.
The pair hit the dance floor for only one song, sharing a slow dance. Their night ended by 9 p.m. because Keith has an early bedtime.
Holm then took his girlfriend to an after-prom event at a bowling alley.
