City fire crews responded to 3 overnight fires

YOUNGSTOWN — City fire crews responded to three fire calls Wednesday evening.

About 6:45 p.m., a police officer spotted smoke coming out of the basement of a vacant 563 Detroit Ave. home on the South Side. When firefighters got inside they discovered someone set fire to a pile of clothes in the basement, and it was quickly put out. Damage is listed at $250. The cause is listed as arson.

Just after 10 p.m., crews were called to a garage fire at a West Side home at 41 S. Osborn Ave. Reports said neighbors told firefighters the house was occupied until three days ago and there were still lights on inside. Damage is listed at $3,000, a total loss. No one was injured.

Just after 11 p.m., crews were called to a vacant house fire at 201 E. Delason Ave., where they found a brick home engulfed in flames with one side caved in. Reports said firefighters protected adjacent homes from damage and allowed to burn down. Damage is listed at $90. There were no injuries.

The cause for the latter two fires is under investigation.
