No drunken drivers at weekend checkpoint

CANFIELD

Officials with the Mahoning County OVI (operating a vehicle impaired) Task Force did not interact with drunken drivers last weekend.

A total of 374 vehicles went through a checkpoint from 11 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday at 118 N. Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown. Of the 374 vehicles, 15 were directed into an area for further investigation.

A saturation patrol was conducted with the checkpoint, and 15 vehicles were stopped. In all those, four traffic citations were issued to drivers for speeding, expired license plate and two for lack of adult restraint.

“The use of designated drivers, DD For Hire and taxis were observed throughout the checkpoint operation,” a news release said.

Assault near infant

A township man faces two domestic-violence charges and a resisting-arrest charge after a victim reported to police he assaulted her and tried to burn their apartment down in the presence of their 5-month-old baby.

Township police arrested Christopher Taylor, 20, of Shields Road after getting called to the couple’s apartment for a dispute Monday and discovering he had active domestic-violence warrants stemming from a previous incident Sunday.

He also reportedly threatened the victim, 19, with weapons during the Monday dispute.

When police tried to arrest Taylor, he reportedly refused to put his hands behind his back and dropped to the floor.

Taylor was taken to the Mahoning County jail.

Incident at bar

BOARDMAN

An Austintown man is charged with felonious assault and possession of drug paraphernalia after an incident that started at a bar on South Avenue.

Police stopped Brian Zordich, 21, on Mathews Road on Sunday after tracking him down as the suspect in the fight.

When police responded to the bar, they reportedly found an unconscious man lying in the parking lot. A witness gave police information about the suspect’s car, which another officer followed and stopped.

Police then found drug paraphernalia in Zordich’s car. Zordich posted bond and is scheduled to appear in Mahoning County Area Court here Thursday.

Trustees meeting

Poland Township trustees will meet at 6 p.m. today at the township administration building, 3339 Dobbins Road.

Sheriff candidate

HOWLAND

Paul Monroe, who has been a police officer in Howland more than 30 years and Howland police chief the past 12, announced his candidacy Tuesday for the 2016 Trumbull County sheriff’s race.

He previously served on the Trumbull County Homicide Squad and was commander of the Trumbull County Drug Task Force. He received several awards and commendations for his work in local homicide investigations, according to a press release.

“This campaign is about us and our families and what is best for our community,” Monroe said. “Yes, we need jobs, but we need to clean up Trumbull [County] and make it safe again.”

Others who have announced their plans to run are Sheriff Thomas Altiere and retired Warren police officer Joe O’Grady.

City man cited for discharging firearm

YOUNGSTOWN

A West Side man was cited over the weekend for discharging a firearm in city limits after he told police he fired a warning shot in the air while chasing a juvenile he suspected of breaking into his car.

Police were called to the 300 block of South Bon Air Avenue about 10:40 p.m. Sunday where Peter Horvath, 30, said he discovered the break-in and chased a male juvenile thorough several yards and fired a warning shot when the juvenile refused to stop.

The juvenile was taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center. Horvath was given a citation.

Fire on home’s porch

YOUNGSTOWN

A short in an electrical outlet caused a fire on the porch of an East Side home in the 900 block of Katherine Street about 12:20 p.m. Tuesday.

No one was injured, but fire officials said the homeowners spotted the fire and called 911 or it could have spread quickly.

Crews also were called about the same time to a grease fire in a Logan Avenue restaurant on the North Side but details of that blaze were not available.

Powerstown meeting

Shots fired at car

YOUNGSTOWN

Police continue investigating a report of a 29-year-old man who was not injured after someone fired several shots at his car early Monday on an East Side street.

Police were called to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital at about 4:35 a.m. for a report of a car with bullet holes.

The driver told police he was at Shehy Avenue and Oak Street when a vehicle came up behind him and he heard gunfire. The man told police he could feel bullets hitting his car, and he drove to the hospital to make sure he was not hurt.

Police counted eight bullet holes in the car.
